HP Omen Laptop says I need to update the driver for 12thGen Intel i9-12900H to version 10.0.26100.8972 but it was released April 20th, 2009. The date gives me pause... Driver update is a valid version, but the 2009 date???

You do not need to update the Intel processor drivers, all Intel processors use the exact same generic processor driver that was released in April 2009 and that never needs updating, this is the same for many devices on your PC, for example all drives use a generic driver released in 2006.

In 2009 the CPU did not exist.

The old date by itself is not a problem. Driver dates are descriptive information set by the driver provider and can be any date they choose. Windows uses targeting information inside the driver files to decide which driver is the best match, not the displayed date.

For Microsoft system drivers, an old date can also be intentional. Microsoft sometimes uses very old dates on system drivers so Windows does not overwrite custom manufacturer drivers.

If the HP Omen update is coming from Windows Update or HP’s support tools, the date alone is not a reason to avoid it. The version number and device targeting matter more than the displayed release date.

    A practical approach:

    1. If the laptop is working normally, there is no need to chase the date alone.
    2. If the update is offered by Windows Update, it is intended as an applicable driver for the device.
    3. If the update is offered by HP’s official support software or HP’s support page, that is also a valid source.
    4. Avoid third-party driver updater utilities, because they can suggest misleading “outdated driver” warnings or install incompatible drivers.

So, the 2009 date is not evidence that the driver is wrong or unsafe.
