A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
English-only support.
If Microsoft Authenticator does not let identity verification complete, check these in order:
- Unlock the Authenticator app on the device. If the app is locked, the verification prompt may not appear.
- Turn on notifications for Microsoft Authenticator. Also check whether notifications are silent.
- Make sure the device has internet access. Try switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version. Versions older than 12 months are not supported.
- Check the device date and time and set them correctly. If the clock was manual, switch it to automatic, then restart the device.
- If battery optimization is enabled, turn it off for Authenticator in the app settings.
- If a VPN is enabled, disconnect it and test again.
- Open Authenticator and confirm the app opens normally, is responsive, and the account is listed.
- Restart the device and try the sign-in again.
If the message is "Authentication did not complete", the common causes are: app locked, notifications disabled, outdated app, network issues, incorrect date/time, or forgotten credentials.
If the message is "Something went wrong. [4s8qz]", wait a few moments and try again, then update the app and restart the device.
If multiple sign-in attempts were made, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication may temporarily block more attempts. Wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
If this is a work or school account and the issue continues after these checks, send logs from Authenticator using Send feedback from the app menu, then contact the IT administrator or helpdesk.
