Widows 10 boots into X: drive

Booting loads windows 10 into X: drive. I am told this a RAM drive. Can I proceed. With dowloaded USB based Microsoft Media creation tool to repair or do I need to find a way to back up those files on this X: drive before I proceed with repair ?

Yep - you can generally proceed with the Windows 10 USB repair tools. X: is typically the temporary RAM drive used by the Windows Recovery Environment, and it is not normally your actual Windows installation or your personal-data drive.

Do not back up files from X: just because they are there. Those files are part of the recovery environment and will disappear when you reboot.

Before doing any repair operation that could modify the Windows installation, however, make sure your important personal files are backed up from the actual Windows drive (usually C:, but it can have a different letter when booted into WinRE). If you are uncertain which drive contains your Users folder and personal files, check that first.

If your USB was created with Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, you can boot from it and select Repair your computer rather than Install Windows. That gives you access to Startup Repair, System Restore, Command Prompt, and other recovery options without immediately reinstalling Windows.

Yes, it is reasonable to proceed with USB installation media to reach Windows Recovery Environment and try repair options. If the PC will not start normally, installation media can be used to boot into Windows RE by starting from the USB, going through the initial setup screen, and selecting Repair my PC instead of installing Windows.

Before any recovery or reinstall step, back up important data if possible. Recovery actions such as Reset or reinstall can cause data loss. If recovery options are not working, creating installation media on another working PC and using it to access repair options is the supported path.

A practical order is:

Back up important files first if they are accessible. Some recovery methods may remove files, apps, and settings.
Boot from the USB created with Media Creation Tool.
On the Windows Setup screen, select Next and then Repair my PC to enter Windows Recovery Environment.
In Windows RE, try non-destructive options first, such as Startup Repair or System Restore if available.
If those do not work, use reinstall only after confirming backups are complete.

If there is no usable recovery drive or installation media already available, create installation media on another working PC and use that USB to boot the nonworking PC.
