OneDrive files were deleted and restored, but the contents are missing

Hello,

While using OneDrive, a notification appeared and I accidentally clicked OK without fully reviewing it. Afterward, I discovered that a number of my files had been deleted. I attempted to restore the files using both the Windows Recycle Bin and the OneDrive web Recycle Bin. Although the folders and file names have been restored, the actual contents of the folders are either missing or cannot be opened properly. Are there any additional recovery options or troubleshooting steps available when restored OneDrive files appear to be incomplete or corrupted? I would appreciate any guidance on how to recover the missing file contents and restore my data. Thank you.

When restored OneDrive folders reappear but the files inside are missing, incomplete, or won’t open, use this recovery path:

    1. Search from the OneDrive website first
      • Sign in to OneDrive on the web.
      • Use Search everything at the top of the page.
      • Search by more than filename if possible, such as dates, tags, or descriptions.
      • For education or work accounts, also confirm the correct account is signed in, because files may have been saved under another Microsoft account.
    2. Check the OneDrive web Recycle bin again
      • In the left pane, select Recycle bin.
      • If the missing items are there, select them and choose Restore.
      • For work or school accounts, files may have been deleted after 93 days.
    3. Check the local Windows Recycle Bin
      • If the files were deleted from the synced OneDrive folder on the PC, open Recycle Bin in Windows.
      • Select the files or folders and choose Restore.
      • They return to their original location.
      • Note: deleted online-only files do not appear in the computer Recycle Bin.
    4. Use OneDrive restore if the deletion or corruption affected many files
      • If the organization supports it, OneDrive can be restored to a previous point in time.
      • In OneDrive on the web, select the top-right menu, then Options and Restore your OneDrive.
      • This can undo actions on files and folders from the last 30 days.
      • Caution: files or folders created after the restore point are sent to the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
    5. Check whether the files were saved outside OneDrive or never fully synced
      • Use File Explorer to search the local device.
      • Also check whether the files are in another storage location.
      • If files are not found in search or in the OneDrive Recycle Bin, they usually cannot be retrieved.
    6. Escalate to the IT administrator with the right details
      • If this is a OneDrive for education account and the files are still missing or corrupted after the steps above, the IT administrator may be able to investigate further.
      • Provide:
        • file or folder names
        • for photos or videos, the date taken
        • approximately when the files were last accessed
        • which device was used

If the issue affected a large set of folders and they were restored without their original contents, restoring the OneDrive to a point before the event is the main supported recovery option in the provided guidance.

    Hi Rhodes,

Thank you for sharing the details of what happened.

As this is a user-to-user community forum, I do not have the ability to directly access or modify your account or service. However, I can provide guidance, recommend next steps, share applicable resources, and direct you to the appropriate support channels so the issue can be investigated further.

Based on the behavior described, it is possible that the restore process recovered the folder structure or file names, but not all file contents were fully restored. This can also happen if the files were online-only, were not fully synced locally, were overwritten, or became corrupted during the sync or restore process.

Here are some steps you can try:

First, please pause OneDrive sync temporarily. This helps prevent any further changes from syncing while you are trying to recover the files.

1/ Check OneDrive on the web

Sign in to OneDrive through a web browser and check the following locations:

    • My files
    • Recycle bin
    • Search results for the missing file names or file types

2/ Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin again

    • Some files may still appear as separate items even if the folder itself has already been restored.
    • Please look for individual files inside the OneDrive web Recycle Bin and restore them if available.

3/ Use Version History for files that cannot be opened

If a file exists but appears corrupted or does not open correctly

    4/ Try Restore your OneDrive

If many files were deleted, overwritten, or corrupted at the same time, you may be able to restore your entire OneDrive to a previous point in time.

    • In OneDrive on the web, go to Settings > Restore your OneDrive
    • User's image
    • Choose a date and time before the issue occurred.
    • Reference: Restore your OneDrive

5/ Check whether another device still has a local copy

    • If OneDrive was synced to another computer, please avoid opening OneDrive on that device immediately. It may still have a local copy of the missing files before the deletion or corruption synced.

If the files are still missing or cannot be opened after trying the steps above, please reach out to your school IT department. They may be able to check additional recovery options, such as administrator-level recycle bin recovery, retention policies, audit logs, or backup options for your school Microsoft 365 account.
