Hi @Hafiza Lalani
Microsoft Authenticator normally generates a 6-digit verification code for a Microsoft work/school account and an 8-digit verification code for a personal Microsoft account. Therefore, if your Authenticator app is showing an 8-digit code while the Power BI sign-in page is asking for a 6-digit code, please first check whether you are selecting the personal Microsoft account entry in Authenticator rather than the work or school account entry.
According to Sign Up or Purchase Power BI as an Individual - Power BI | Microsoft Learn, to sign up for the Power BI service, you need a work or school email account, consumer email accounts cannot be used directly.
Before assuming that this is a work/school account, could you please provide the email address or email domain you use to sign in to Power BI? (Please redact the personal part of the address)
- a personal Microsoft account such as @outlook.com or @live.com,
- an @onmicrosoft.com tenant account, or
- a company-managed Microsoft Entra work/school account using your organization's domain?
The recovery path is different depending on which type of account you are using and how it is managed.
-If this is a personal Microsoft account, please note that the account recovery form is generally not effective when multifactor authentication (MFA) is enabled and you no longer have access to the configured verification method.
To contact Microsoft Support: go to Microsoft Contact Us > Type "Support" and click Get Help > Click Sign in to contact Support at the bottom of the page. > Under products and Services, select Microsoft 365 and Office Option > Under category, select technical Support > Chat with a support agent in your web browser.
-If this is a company-managed Microsoft Entra (work or school) account that uses your organization's domain, please contact your IT administrator. Your administrator can reset your MFA registration or update your authentication methods using the guidance Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…
-If this is an @onmicrosoft.com tenant account and you are the only administrator who is locked out of the tenant, there is unfortunately no self-service option to bypass or reset MFA. In this scenario, you will need to contact Microsoft Support directly. A support agent can create a support ticket for the affected tenant and, if necessary, escalate the case to the Data Protection team, which can assist with restoring access to the tenant.
You can find the appropriate support phone number for your region here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.
Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:
(While calling, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore it and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)
In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare:
- What kind of problem are you experiencing?
- Answer: Authenticator
- What products do you use?
- Answer: Office 365 for business
- Is this for an education or company account?
- Answer: For companies
- Are you an administrator?
- Answer: Yes
- Are there any other administrators in your organization?
- Answer: No. I am the only admin in my tenant
- Do you need a... Service request?
- Answer: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.
I hope this helps.
