If Surface Book 1 does not recognize a battery after replacement, the supported next steps are:
- Check the battery icon on the taskbar.
- If it shows a red X, the device detects the power supply but cannot detect the battery.
- If Surface turns off when unplugged, start a service request.
- Try the standard battery driver reinstall.
- Plug in the Surface.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries.
- Uninstall Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery or Surface Battery.
- In Device Manager, select the computer at the top, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart the device.
- Install updates after the driver refresh.
- The documented battery-driver recovery flow includes reinstalling the battery device and restarting so Windows can detect the hardware again.
- If the battery still is not detected after replacement, service is the documented path.
- For a replaced battery, Windows battery reporting reflects the currently installed battery’s internal data, including cycle count and full charge capacity.
- If detection continues to fail after the driver steps, the replacement battery or hardware connection should be checked through Microsoft support/service.
- If the replacement was done on a newer repairable Surface model, battery authentication may require a stable internet connection and the latest Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. If validation fails, install the Surface Management Extension, reboot, and try again. If failures continue, contact Microsoft Support.
