A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
This is usually an account re-authentication issue in iOS Mail after Outlook/Hotmail sign-in changes, or the account may need to be added back using modern authentication.
Try these steps in order:
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Tap the Outlook/Hotmail account.
- If shown, tap Account Settings or the Password field.
- Enter the correct current password, then tap Done.
- Open the Mail app and check whether mail sync resumes.
If the account still shows Account not authenticated, or Mail shows Cannot Get Mail – The connection to the server failed, remove and re-add the account as Outlook.com:
- Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Tap the affected email account, then tap Delete Account.
- Go back to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
- Choose Outlook.com and complete sign-in.
If removing and re-adding still does not fix it:
- Remove the account again.
- Go to Settings > Safari and tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Reboot the iPhone.
- Add the account back through Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > Outlook.com.
If sign-in fails with Microsoft account prompts such as incorrect password, too many sign-in attempts, or verification code issues, recover account access first, then sign in again in Mail.
If the problem is only in the iPhone Mail app and Outlook works on a computer, the issue may be with the email app. In that case, using the Outlook mobile app is recommended.
