If the account is stuck in a repeated 24-hour wait / too many attempts state, the supported recovery path is:

    1. Stop repeated sign-in and reset attempts. Repeated attempts can extend or reset the block.
    2. Wait at least 24 hours, and if needed longer — up to 1 week. Microsoft states some blocks can clear automatically, and repeated attempts can keep the lock in place.
    3. Try a different verification method if one is available on the account, such as an alternate email instead of SMS.
    4. Try a different network by switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or using another Wi‑Fi network.
    5. Use the Sign-in helper guided tool to identify the correct sign-in recovery option: Start
    6. If verification codes are part of the problem, use the verification code troubleshooting guidance and avoid repeated code requests. If still blocked, choose another method or wait until access to the listed phone or email is available.
    7. If normal sign-in recovery still fails, complete the account recovery form from a device and location previously used for that account. Microsoft says this improves recognition. A response is typically sent within 24 hours.
    8. If the account is locked and the sign-in page does not show Next, use the aka.ms/ reinstatement link shown in that window and submit only one request. Microsoft warns that submitting additional requests can slow the response.
    9. For technical support, use Contact Microsoft Support through the official support flow if the guided tools do not resolve the issue. Support cannot send password reset links, verification codes, or change account details, but can route the case to the best available support option.

    Important limits from Microsoft:

    • If two-step verification is turned on and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible, support agents cannot reset the account or change account details.
    • If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
