Error code 0xc0e90002 One Drive in S-mode.

I did what you advised but unfortunately my Windows Defender app doesn’t have a scan button so I can’t do a quick scan unless it wants me to (characteristic of S-mode I guess).

I have just realised, it should be Windows Security that opens on Windows. Microsoft Security just provides the overview. Why they have two products, I don't know. Windows security is the light blue shield icon with a tick.

My virus protection from Microsoft Defender had a green check ✅ on it indicating no viruses or malware,

If this is the case, then there is no malware on the device its self. If the device was infected, Microsoft Defender would have picked this up.

As to those pop-ups that I have been telling you about, they come from Firefox which is my main browser. I went on Microsoft Edge and saw no pop-ups there

If this is only showing through Firefox, then it sounds as though it could be a malicious browser extension that may have been installed. If you have any browser extensions, please can you disable them one by one and test test to see if those pop-ups show.

What I mean is disable one and restart the browser, and do a test to browse the internet to see if these pop-ups show. If they continue showing, then it isn't that extension. So you can disable another extension and restart the browser, and try again. Repeating this process until eventually you find that this has stopped the pop-ups. This would be the extension that is malicious which is causing the pop-ups to show.

Do you think system restore might resolve both problems?

The system restore won't resolve the Firefox problem as it doesn't remove the extensions from the web browser. So it will appear after it has restored its self and you have signed into the browser again.

In terms of the OneDrive error, this could help resolve this. However, I would try the reset option first before doing this. If it doesn't work, then you could try the system restore as the chances are it is the Windows files that may have been corrupted which is causing OneDrive to not work properly.

I now have a new problem. It seems that the error code pop-up has generated pop-ups claiming to be from McAfee saying that my computer is infected and that I should get subscribe to McAfee! I checked Windows Defender and it indicates that everything is OK, however, I can't do a quick scan because there is no quick scan button to click on to. Is this because of S-mode? If so, how can I get a quick scan? I'm exasperated! Thank you. Stuart.

The error code you have mentioned crops up when there is a corrupt system file for OneDrive installation or corrupt system files for the operating system.

The first thing I would recommend doing is resetting OneDrive. This can be done on any version of Windows 11 whether it is in S mode or not.

You can do this by pressing the start key (Windows logo) & R together. You can also right click onto the start icon on the Taskbar and clicking onto "Run"

This opens the run dialog box on your desktop, just above the Taskbar.

When this has opened, please can you copy and paste the following command into the textbox on the right-hand side of run. Now depending on the version of Windows and the type of OneDrive installed will depend on which of these work. Please start from the top and work your way down. If you see a message telling you Windows couldn't find... then please move onto the next one.

%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

If that command doesn't work, please try this one

C:\Program Files\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

If this that one doesn't work, please try this one

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

• ​__Fix 1 (Reinstall via Microsoft Store):__ Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, uninstall Microsoft OneDrive, restart, and reinstall it from the Microsoft Store (works natively in S-Mode).
• ​__Fix 2 (Reset OneDrive):__ Press Win + R, run %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset, and reopen OneDrive.
• ​__Fix 3 (System Update):__ Go to Settings > Windows Update and run updates to repair underlying Windows files without needing to disable S-Mode.
