My personal OneDrive on my laptop is currently synced, but my school account is not connecting and is asking me to 're-enter credentials'. However, when you try to enter it, an error appears and the following information is displayed. Message: The credential is invalid. Unexpected sub status (6008). Tag: 657rx Code: 2148073494

    Dear @Smith Eleanor,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on the error message “657rx” that you received, this typically means that Microsoft is unable to recognize your account credentials. This can happen for several reasons. I’d like to guide you through a few steps that may help you sign in successfully. These steps are easy to follow and tailored to your situation.

You can try the following steps to clear your credentials cache to ensure a clean reset

For a school account showing “re-enter credentials” with “The credential is invalid. Unexpected sub status (6008)”, the supported next step is to involve the organization’s IT administrator.

This issue can be caused by cached credentials from a previous setup or device registration conflict, and for a school-managed account the documented resolution may require admin-assisted investigation.

    Self-service checks that are supported:

    1. Verify the school account can sign in on the web at the Microsoft 365 sign-in page.
    2. In OneDrive on Windows:
      • Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
      • Select Help & Settings > Settings.
      • Open the Account tab.
      • Confirm the expected school account is the one being used.
    3. Clear OneDrive cached sign-in data on Windows:
      • Press Windows key + R.
      • Enter %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings.
      • Delete PreSignInSettingsConfig.json.
    4. Start OneDrive again and try signing in with the school account.

If the error continues after that, the recommended path is:

    • Contact the school IT administrator.
    • Ask the admin to open a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center because this type of school-account sign-in problem may require backend diagnostics and profile reset steps that are not available at end-user level.
