Is there a limit to the number of participants in a Teams meeting?

Our company uses Microsoft 365 Enterprise and plans to hold a medium to large online meeting with an estimated 600 participants. We're worried about fitting that many people into the meeting room, so we'd like to ask if there's a limit to the number of participants in Teams meetings? If we want to increase the limit at once, how do we apply for an extension?

Yes. With Microsoft 365 Enterprise plans, a standard Teams meeting supports up to 1,000 interactive participants. Since the planned meeting is about 600 participants, it fits within the normal Teams meeting limit.

    For larger meetings:

    • After around 900 attendees enter, additional attendees can join with a view-only experience.
    • The maximum is 10,000 attendees in a Teams meeting when view-only is enabled.
    • If view-only is turned off, attendance is limited to the first 1,000 attendees.

There is no documented process here to apply for an extension for a standard Teams meeting beyond those limits. If more than the standard meeting capacity is needed, Microsoft recommends using Teams events options such as town halls or other event experiences designed for larger audiences.

    Also note:

    • If breakout rooms are used, the meeting is limited to 300 attendees.
    • If the meeting is created from Outlook as a Teams meeting, the invite recipient limit is 750. Using a distribution list can help invite a large number of attendees.

    Hi Clark,

Your current plan supports up to 1,000 interactive participants per standard Teams meeting (audio, video, chat, and screen sharing all included). Since you're expecting around 600 attendees, this fits comfortably within the limit, and no special configuration or request to Microsoft is needed.

If anyone plans to use breakout rooms during the meeting, please note that creating breakout rooms automatically caps the meeting at 300 participants, which would be well below your expected attendance.

If you expect to exceed 1,000 participants, there are two paths:

    1. Enable the view-only large meeting experience through the Teams Admin Center (meeting policies). This lets additional attendees beyond 900–1,000 join in a watch-only capacity, scaling up toward 10,000.
    2. Use a Teams Webinar or Town Hall event format instead of a standard meeting. These are built for larger one-to-many audiences, with Town Halls supporting up to 10,000–20,000 attendees.

    Hi Clark,

Yes, Microsoft Teams supports large meetings, and with a Microsoft 365 Enterprise plan, a standard Teams meeting can support up to 1,000 interactive participants.

For your planned meeting with around 600 participants, you should be within the normal capacity, so you would not need to request a special extension.

    A few points to consider:

Up to 1,000 participants can participate interactively in a standard meeting.

For meetings larger than the interactive capacity, Teams can provide a view-only experience for additional attendees, depending on the meeting configuration and licensing.

If you use breakout rooms, the participant limit is lower, so this should be considered when planning a 600-person meeting.

For very large one-to-many events, Teams Town Hall or Webinar may be more appropriate.

For the latest limits and licensing details, Microsoft recommends checking the official Teams limits and specifications and Teams meeting planning documentation.

Therefore, for approximately 600 attendees, a standard Teams meeting should be sufficient, provided the meeting configuration and licensing support the required features.
