Why won't the Microsoft sign-in accept my PIN on my wife's laptop computer when I try to update her Office 365? She shares my subscription, so, I need to sign into her device with my email address since I own the subscription, yet Microsoft rejects my PIN when it asks for authentication of my subscription.

As the AI bot suggested, the PIN is device-specific; it is used to confirm your account on your PC.

Which type of subscription do you have? To share with your wife, you would want a Microsoft 365 Family (or 365 Premium) subscription, so that you can invite her to install Office with her own account. By using one and the same account, you are also sharing the file storage in OneDrive, which isn't necessarily what you want.

A Windows PIN is device-specific and is not the same as the Microsoft account password used to verify a Microsoft 365 subscription. For Office activation and subscription verification, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription using that account’s email address and password, not the Windows Hello PIN from the laptop.

    Try this:

    1. In the Office app on the laptop, sign out of any incorrect account.
    2. Sign back in with the Microsoft account that has the Microsoft 365 subscription.
    3. Use the account password when prompted for authentication.
    4. Check whether the subscription is active on the Microsoft account Services or Payment & billing page.
    5. If Office shows activation or unlicensed errors, make sure the correct account is being used and check whether more than one copy of Office is installed, because multiple installs can cause activation conflicts.

If the password is forgotten or the account cannot sign in:

    1. Use the Sign-in Helper tool.
    2. If needed, reset the Microsoft account password.
    3. If the email address might be wrong, look up the Microsoft account username.

If the issue is specifically the Windows PIN on the laptop:

    1. Make sure the device is connected to the internet.
    2. On the sign-in screen, switch from PIN to password and sign in with the Microsoft account password instead.
    3. After signing in, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and remove and set up the PIN again.
    4. If the laptop has any work or school account connected under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, disconnect it and restart, because that can interfere with PIN requirements on a personal PC.

If the subscription is active but the Install button or activation still does not work, contact Microsoft Support.
