OneNote for iPhone repeatedly returns to Sign In after successful Microsoft 365 Business authentication

I am having a very specific sign-in problem with the OneNote app on my iPhone 13 (iOS 26.5.2) and would appreciate help determining what is preventing OneNote from completing the sign-in.

I recently changed from Microsoft 365 Family to Microsoft 365 Business Basic and created a new Microsoft 365 Business tenant/user. My new account uses an @onmicrosoft.com address.

The new Business account works normally on my Windows PC and in Microsoft 365 on the web.

The problem

On my iPhone, OneNote will not complete the sign-in.

When I open OneNote and select my new Business account:

  1. OneNote displays Choose an Account.
  2. I select my new @onmicrosoft.com Business account.
  3. Microsoft Authenticator briefly opens.
  4. I approve the authentication successfully.
  5. OneNote immediately returns me to the Sign In screen.
  6. There is no error message.

This happens every time.

I have already established that the account itself works on this iPhone

The following Microsoft applications/services work normally on the same iPhone using the same new Business account:

  • Microsoft Teams — signs in and works normally.
  • Microsoft OneDrive — signs in and works normally and can access my Business OneDrive.
  • Microsoft Authenticator — works normally.
  • Safari — can sign into Microsoft 365 successfully.
  • OneNote for the web — works normally with the new Business account.

I have also verified the OneNote/Business environment

On my Windows PC, I created a brand-new OneNote notebook in my new Business OneDrive.

That notebook:

  • works correctly in OneNote for Windows;
  • appears correctly in OneNote for the web;
  • synchronizes between the PC and web versions.

Therefore, the Business account, Business OneDrive, OneNote service, and notebook itself appear to be functioning correctly.

Troubleshooting already attempted

I have:

  • Deleted and reinstalled OneNote on the iPhone.
  • Restarted the iPhone.
  • Used OneNote's Reset OneNote settings.
  • Deleted the OneNote login credentials using the Reset function.
  • Confirmed Background App Refresh and Cellular Data are enabled for OneNote.
  • Confirmed Microsoft Authenticator has the new Business account registered and working.
  • Confirmed there are no warnings/errors in Authenticator.
  • Confirmed the iPhone is not currently enrolled in my former employer's device-management/security system.
  • Successfully signed into Teams and OneDrive using the new Business account on the same phone.

There is still an old employer account visible as an account choice in OneNote/Authenticator. I do not want to reconnect my personal iPhone to my former employer's security/IT management system, so I have not proceeded through the employer's additional security enrollment when that account is selected.

Importantly, the problem also occurs when I select only my new Business account. The new account authenticates successfully but OneNote immediately returns to Sign In.

My question

What could cause OneNote for iOS to successfully authenticate through Microsoft Authenticator but then reject/fail to establish the authenticated session and return to the Sign In screen without an error, when Teams, OneDrive, Safari, OneNote Web, and OneNote for Windows all work normally with the same Microsoft 365 Business account?

I am particularly interested in whether this could be caused by:

  • a OneNote iOS authentication/token/cache problem;
  • an issue with Microsoft's iOS account broker/shared authentication system;
  • an interaction between the old employer account and the new Business account;
  • a Microsoft Entra ID/Conditional Access setting specific to OneNote;
  • an iOS-specific OneNote bug; or
  • some other setting specific to the OneNote iOS application.

I am looking for troubleshooting specific to this authentication loop rather than general instructions for setting up Microsoft Authenticator, since Authenticator and the other Microsoft apps are already working correctly.

    I am having this exact issue, none of the troubleshooting above has worked. It's specifically linked to OneNote because all other apps can be signed into upon reinstall.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting and for clearly documenting the behavior across your devices and Microsoft 365 services.

    Based on the evidence you've provided, you've already narrowed the issue down significantly. Because the same Microsoft 365 Business account works successfully with Teams, OneDrive, Microsoft 365 on the web, OneNote for the web, and OneNote for Windows, this appears more likely to be related to how the OneNote iOS app is establishing its authenticated session rather than an issue with the account itself, OneDrive, licensing, or notebook synchronization.

    Please try the following additional troubleshooting steps:

    1/ Perform a full OneNote reset

    Since you've already reset login credentials, the next step is to perform a more complete OneNote reset:

    Confirm that your notebook is accessible in OneNote for the web (which you've already verified).

    Force-close the OneNote app.

    On your iPhone, go to Settings > OneNote > Reset OneNote.

    Enable both:

    • Delete All Notebooks
    • Delete Login Credentials

    Reopen OneNote and sign in using only your new Microsoft 365 Business account.

    This ensures that any potentially corrupted local notebook data or cached authentication information is removed before a fresh sign-in attempt.

    2/ Update All Microsoft 365 Apps

    Microsoft has documented issues on iOS/iPadOS where Microsoft 365 applications may repeatedly prompt for sign-in or fail during the account initialization process. In some cases, these issues were related to a timing condition during app startup that affected the post-authentication process.

    Even if your new tenant is not managed through Intune, your symptoms closely resemble a situation where authentication succeeds but the application fails to establish the authenticated session.

    Please update the following apps from the App Store:

    • OneNote
    • Microsoft Authenticator
    • OneDrive
    • Teams
    • Outlook
    • Word
    • Excel
    • PowerPoint

    After updating, restart the iPhone and test OneNote again.

    For additional information, please see: Unexpected sign-outs in Microsoft 365 iOS apps with Intune MAM | Microsoft Support

    3/ Remove the old employer account from the shared Microsoft identity surface, if possible without re-enrolling

    Although the sign-in loop occurs even when you select only the new Business account, the presence of the old employer account may still be relevant because Microsoft applications on iOS can share authentication state through Microsoft Authenticator and other Microsoft identity components.

    Microsoft's guidance for Microsoft Entra ID applications notes that iOS single sign-on relies on brokered authentication and shared token storage. If stale account information or authentication artifacts remain, they can occasionally interfere with application sign-in experiences.

    For reference: Why does an MSAL-based iOS app keep asking for credentials with Microsoft Entra?

    If the former employer account appears to be only a stale account entry, you may want to remove it from Microsoft Authenticator and other Microsoft applications where possible. However, do not proceed with any enrollment or security-registration prompts from your former employer's organization if you do not wish to reconnect your personal device to their management policies.

    If the issue persists:

    If OneNote continues to return to the Sign In screen after successful authentication, the next step would be to open a support case with Microsoft. Because the account and notebook function correctly everywhere except the OneNote iOS app, Microsoft support can review sign-in and service logs that are not visible from the client side.

    You can create a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center by following this guide: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn .

    I hope this helps move the investigation forward. Please let me know the results of the full reset and whether removing the old account entry changes the behavior. I’d be happy to assist.

    Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    The most likely cause is a corrupted or stale Office identity cache on iOS rather than a problem with the Microsoft 365 Business account itself. That fits the fact that Teams, OneDrive, Safari, OneNote for the web, and OneNote on Windows all work, while OneNote alone returns to Sign In after authentication.

    Supported causes from the available guidance:

    1. Corrupted OneNote/Office sign-in credentials on iOS Microsoft documents that repeated sign-in prompts in OneNote for iPhone and iPad can happen when credentials become corrupted. OneNote and other Office apps on iOS share the same Office identity, so a bad cached identity in one app can affect sign-in behavior.
    2. Shared Microsoft 365 app identity state on iOS Microsoft states that Office apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote share the same Office identity on iOS. That means OneNote can fail because of shared credential state even if another app appears to sign in correctly.
    3. A OneNote for iOS sign-in loop issue already recognized by Microsoft Microsoft has a documented issue where OneNote for Mac, iPhone, and iPad repeatedly prompts for sign-in and recommends updating all Office apps first, then clearing credentials.

    What to do next, based on the documented fixes and on what has already been tried:

    1. Update every Microsoft 365 app on the iPhone Do not update only OneNote. Update OneNote, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive to the latest available versions. Microsoft specifically notes that because Office apps share identity, a bug in another Office app can corrupt the shared identity.
    2. Clear OneNote sign-in credentials again and fully close the app before reopening In iPhone Settings:
      • Go to Settings > OneNote > Reset OneNote
      • Turn on Delete Sign-In Credentials
      • Make sure OneNote is not running
      • Reopen OneNote and sign in again
    3. If available, reset another Microsoft 365 iOS app first, then sign in there before returning to OneNote Because the Office identity is shared across apps, signing in successfully through another Office app can refresh the shared identity state before retrying OneNote.
    4. Test with only the new business account path Since the old employer account is still visible, avoid selecting it. The documented guidance does not identify old-account coexistence as the root cause, but the shared identity model means stale account state can still interfere with OneNote’s cached credentials.

    What the context supports less strongly:

    • Conditional Access or Entra ID policy specific to OneNote: not supported by the provided material.
    • Former employer device management as the direct cause: not supported by the provided material.
    • A tenant or notebook problem: contradicted by the successful sign-in and sync behavior in web, Windows, Teams, and OneDrive.

    Developer-oriented note only if this is a custom iOS app scenario: Microsoft documents that repeated sign-in prompts in iOS apps using MSAL can be caused by browser configurations that do not allow cookie sharing. That applies to apps built with MSAL, not to standard troubleshooting of the OneNote app itself.

    So, from the supported evidence, the best fit is:

    • OneNote for iOS cached credential corruption or stale shared Office identity state
    • Possibly influenced by another Microsoft 365 app’s shared sign-in state
    • Not the account, notebook, or general Microsoft 365 authentication service
