I have two Microsoft 365 accounts

I have two Microsoft 365 accounts (family and basic). I don't need both, but I don't want to lose any of my email or Microsoft 365 apps. I believe I initiated the 365 Basic in error to activate a Microsoft Teams session in 2/27/25. I regularly use Outlook, Teams, Word and other Microsoft capabilities. I have had an Outlook email address as my main email since around April 2002. I do not want to loose my hotmail email address and historical email.. I want to close the 365 Basic and retain all the Microsoft 365 functionality that I use under the Family subscription on my account. Can I close the 365 Basic and not do any harm to my Micosoft capabilities? My subscription renewal for the 365 Basic is 9/8/26. I would like to resolve this concern before that date.

Yes. A Microsoft account can have only one active Microsoft 365 subscription, so first confirm whether these are truly two separate subscriptions on the same account or whether one changed the other.

  1. Sign in to Services & Subscriptions and check what is listed for that account.
  2. If Microsoft 365 Family and Microsoft 365 Basic both appear separately, cancel Microsoft 365 Basic and keep Microsoft 365 Family.
  3. If the Basic subscription already shows Turn on recurring billing instead of Cancel subscription, it is already set to expire and no further action is required.

About the impact:

  • Canceling a subscription does not delete existing Outlook.com messages from the inbox.
  • The main risk is storage. If a canceled subscription reduces available storage below what is currently used, then:
    • new OneDrive uploads, edits, and sync can stop
    • Outlook.com sending and receiving can stop
  • Microsoft cloud storage includes OneDrive files and photos, Outlook.com attachments and inline images, Teams message attachments and recordings, Loop files, and Designer project images.

To avoid harm before canceling Basic:

  1. Check which subscription is active and being used for the features needed.
  2. Check current Microsoft storage usage in the Microsoft storage area of the account dashboard.
  3. Make sure the remaining Family subscription provides enough storage for current usage.
  4. If personalized email is in use on Outlook.com, keep that setup in Outlook. Existing personalized email continues to work as long as the Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscription is maintained, but if removed after November 30, 2023, it cannot be added back.

For Microsoft 365 apps:

  • If Family remains active, Microsoft 365 app benefits continue under that subscription.
  • If a subscription expires or sharing stops, files remain intact, but full desktop app editing rights are lost and files become view/print only.

If the goal is to keep Outlook email history, Hotmail/Outlook address, and Microsoft 365 apps, the supported path is:

  • keep Microsoft 365 Family active
  • cancel only Microsoft 365 Basic if it is listed separately
  • verify storage usage first so Outlook.com mail flow and OneDrive are not affected
