An integrated threat protection solution designed to detect, investigate, and respond to cyber threats across Microsoft 365 services.
Renewing Microsoft 365 does not normally delete files, but on Mac the apps can stop allowing edit/save when the app is not fully activated, the license has not refreshed, or the app/OS is on an unsupported version and enters reduced functionality mode.
What likely happened on the MacBook Pro:
- The Office apps may still be signed in with the wrong Microsoft account, or the renewed subscription has not refreshed in the apps yet.
- If the app shows as unlicensed or view-only, Word/Excel can open files but not save changes.
- If macOS or Office is too old, Office can open and print files but cannot edit, save, or create new ones.
What to check first:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select Word > About Word or Excel > About Excel.
- Confirm whether it shows Microsoft 365.
- If save is still blocked after renewal, quit the app completely with Command + Q, reopen it, then go to the app’s Account settings, sign out, and sign in again with the Microsoft account tied to the renewed subscription.
On Mac, also make sure the app and OS are supported:
- Minimum macOS required to complete the update successfully: macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
- Minimum Office app version: 16.83
If Office still will not save after signing in again:
- Open any Office app.
- Go to Help > Check for Updates.
- Install the latest Office updates.
- Reopen the file and test Save again.
Other possible save blockers:
- The file or folder may be read-only or missing write/modify/delete permissions.
- The file may be on an external drive or network location with a connection problem.
- The destination disk may be full.
- Antivirus or file-sharing conflicts can interrupt saving.
If the file is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint and was deleted or access changed while editing, Office may show upload/save errors and require saving a copy.
