A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If this is a work or school account, the restored entry on a new phone usually brings back only the account name. Open the account in Microsoft Authenticator and sign in again. Seeing "Sign in to add your account" is expected after restore.
If sign-in approval or notifications are still going to the old phone, that usually means the old device is still the active Authenticator device. Use this path:
- If the old phone is still available, approve the sign-in there.
- Go to the Security info page and add the new phone as a sign-in method.
- After the new phone works, remove the old phone or old Authenticator registration.
If the old phone is not available:
- Try another verification method on the sign-in page, such as SMS or phone call, if one was previously set up.
- If no alternate method exists and this is a work or school account, contact the organization’s IT admin or help desk for the approved recovery or registration process.
If the app is installed but authentication still fails, check these common causes:
- Make sure Microsoft Authenticator is unlocked.
- Make sure notifications are enabled for the app.
- Update to the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator.
- Check internet connectivity; switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data can help.
- Verify the phone’s date and time are correct.
If the issue is specifically that the backup did not restore on a new iPhone, these checks are supported:
- On the old device, enable iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup.
- In Saved to iCloud, make sure Authenticator is turned on.
- Use Authenticator version 6.8.33 or later.
- Open the app at least once on the old phone before switching.
- On the new iPhone, uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Authenticator.
For passkeys on a new phone, set up the new passkey first and remove old passkeys only after the new one works.
