Multiple Subscription Accounts

I have two MS 365 subscription licenses, one of which is organizational and it appears to be the dominant one, appearing on the right half of the "File > Account" page. My other license is my personal one and it is hidden until I click on "Show additional licensing information"; I'd like to make this my main license. When I click on "Swith License" on my organizational license, a window pops up, saying, "Microsoft / Hello <myName>, let's check your account" and indicates it iis my personal outlook.com account it is talking about, I then click Next, that window disappears, and I find that no changes have taken place.I've already unistalled MS 365 and have reinstalled it from my personal account on Microsoft, but this problem remains. Why is my organizational license not getting stripped from it, can anyone explain?

I resolved the issue by simply signing out, one at a time, of each one of my accounts (from within the "Account" window of any one of the 365 apps), until there was no legitimate user of the subscription service left and I was being asked to sign in before I could continue using the product. At that point, I signed into my personal account only, which made my license the only one the Subscription Product was for; I had earlier also disconnected all the organizational accounts in Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School. I now was able to reconnect these accounts but without giving them management privileges.

Now, I no longer have conflicts where I'll occasionally be asked to sign in to my work/school account, then be told to sign into my personal account, which is what started me looking for this solution.

    Hi @tooolnut

Reinstalling Microsoft 365 does not always remove previously saved accounts or licensing information. Office may still be detecting your organizational account through Windows and automatically using the license associated with it.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    1. Disconnect old work/school accounts from Windows
    • Close all Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and OneNote.
    • Open Windows Settings.
    • Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
    • 사용자의 이미지
    • Check whether your organizational account is listed.
    • If this is your personal computer and it is not managed by your employer, select the organizational account and choose Disconnect.
    • 사용자의 이미지
    1. Clear Office credentials
    • Open the Start menu, search for Credential Manager and open it.
    • Select Windows Credentials
    • Under Generic Credentials look for any entries containing MicrosoftOffice16
    • 사용자의 이미지
    • Select each one and choose Remove.
    1. Clear the Local Identity Cache Folders
    • Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Copy and paste the following path, then press Enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneAuth
    • 사용자의 이미지
    • Delete all the files and folders inside this folder. (If a file refuses to delete, skip it and delete the rest).
    • Press Windows Key + R again, paste the following path, and press Enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\IdentityCache
    • Delete all the files and folders inside this folder as well.
    • 사용자의 이미지
    • Restart your computer.
    • Open Excel or any Office app.
    • When the sign-in window appears sign in with the account that holds the valid license.

If you see Connected to [organization], Managed by [organization], or an Info button showing management policies, the organization may control Office activation. In that case, Switch License may not make a permanent change.

    Your options are to:

    • Contact the organization’s IT administrator and ask whether they can remove the device registration or organizational Office activation.
    • Create a separate local Windows user account for personal use, then sign in to Office under that profile using your personal Outlook.com account.
    • Use your personal Microsoft 365 subscription on a separate personal computer that is not managed by the organization.

Hopefully this helps resolve the issue. If anything is unclear or the issue persists, feel free to reply below.

Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing how things are going!

The organizational license remains visible because Microsoft 365 apps can be activated by a work or school account, and that account can continue to appear alongside a personal subscription in the app. Reinstalling from the personal account does not by itself remove the work or school account from Office.

    What the context supports:

    1. A work or school account is separate from a personal Microsoft account.
      • The work or school account is used for Microsoft 365 for business.
      • The personal Microsoft account is used for consumer services and personal Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
    2. Only one Microsoft 365 for home subscription can be active on a Microsoft account.
      • Adding another home subscription extends time; it does not create extra desktop app rights on that same personal account.
    3. If Office shows licensing or activation conflicts, one documented cause is multiple copies of Office being installed.
      • Since Office was already uninstalled and reinstalled, the remaining issue is more likely account/licensing state than the install source alone.
    4. In organizational scenarios, license visibility and install rights can be controlled by the organization.
      • If a work account is present and licensed, that account can remain part of the Office licensing experience until it is removed or changed by policy/admin assignment.
    5. If a work account has been connected to Windows or Microsoft apps, it can stay associated with the device.
      • In that case, disconnecting the organization account from Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or school can remove that association. Restart afterward.

    Practical path:

    1. In Windows, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
    2. If the organizational account is listed there, select it and disconnect it.
      • Risk: this can remove access to organization-managed apps, policies, and resources on that device.
    3. Restart Windows.
    4. Open an Office app and check File > Account again.
    5. If the work license still appears, the work account is still signed in within Office or still assigned a license by the organization.
    6. If this is an organization-managed account, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin to confirm whether that license is still assigned or whether Office sign-in/install behavior is being controlled for that account.

If the goal is to use only the personal subscription on that device, the key issue is removing the work or school account association, not reinstalling from the personal subscription page.
