1 License, 1 Domain - MS365 Business says UNLICENSED

I got a domain from a different source (WIX). While setting up MS365 we were given onmicrosoft.com and then I noticed it changed it to .onmicrosoft457.com When I go into MS Admin>Active Users> it says onmicrosoft.com is UNLICENSED. What do I do? How do I get a live agent to help fix this?

Hi Charmaine

Hope you're doing well.

The "UNLICENSED” status usually means that the Microsoft 365 Business license has not yet been assigned to the user account. This does not normally mean the domain itself is unlicensed.

Please try the following steps:

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center
  2. Go to Billing > Your products and confirm that your Microsoft 365 Business license is active.
  3. Go to Users > Active users.
  4. Select the user that shows Unlicensed.
  5. Go to Licenses and apps, assign the available Microsoft 365 Business license, then save the changes.

Regarding the domain, the onmicrosoft.com address is the default Microsoft 365 tenant domain. Your Wix domain needs to be added and verified separately in Microsoft 365 under Settings > Domains. Microsoft provides instructions here: Add a custom domain to Microsoft 365

If you would like help from a live Microsoft support agent, please sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, click Help & support, describe the issue, and choose Contact Support if available. Microsoft’s support instructions are here: Get support for Microsoft 365 for business

If the license was purchased through a reseller or partner, you may need to contact that partner directly for support.

I hope this information is useful.

Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I look forward to your thoughts on this.

The onmicrosoft.com address is the default tenant domain created during Microsoft 365 setup. That is expected behavior. After setup, a custom domain such as a Wix domain can be added and verified, and the admin account can then be changed from the default onmicrosoft address to the custom domain address.

For the Unlicensed state in Office or Microsoft 365 apps, use this order:

    1. Sign in with the correct account If Office prompts for sign-in, use the account that was used to buy Microsoft 365. Using the wrong account can show “We couldn't find any Office products.”
    2. Check whether more than one Office copy is installed Multiple installed copies can cause activation conflicts.
    3. Check subscription status If the subscription expired or there is a payment problem, Office can show Unlicensed Product and eventually run in reduced functionality mode.
    4. If this is a business tenant, verify the assigned license In Microsoft 365 for business, admins can assign licenses per user. If the needed service or desktop apps license is not assigned to the user account, the apps may not activate.
    5. If activation still fails, use Microsoft guided support Guided support is available for Office activation problems.

To reach a live support agent for a Microsoft 365 business tenant:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    2. At the bottom right, select Help & Support.
    3. In the Support Assistant pane, enter the issue.
    4. Review the results.
    5. If the issue is not resolved, select Contact support.

If access to the admin center is available but the setup is still confusing, the practical path is:

    • keep the default onmicrosoft domain as the tenant default domain,
    • add and verify the Wix custom domain,
    • then change the admin username/email to the custom domain if needed,
    • and confirm the correct license is assigned to that user.

If the account shows a subscription notice related to payment, that must be fixed first because payment issues can cause the subscription to become expired or suspended.
