why does the default email not open to the outlook client and open the subscription based program

Hi,

To better understand what is happening:

When you say it opens the “subscription based program,” what program or page actually opens? If possible, share the exact name shown.

How are you trying to open your default email, by clicking an email address/link on a website, from another program, or from Windows?

Do you have the Outlook desktop app installed? If so, is it New Outlook or Outlook (classic)?

How are you trying to open your default email, by clicking an email address/link on a website, from another program, or from Windows?

This usually happens for one of these supported reasons:

Classic Outlook is not actually the default for MAILTO
In Windows, the app handling email links is controlled by the MAILTO protocol. If MAILTO is assigned to Outlook on the web or a different Outlook app, email links will open there instead of Classic Outlook.
The installed Outlook app is the new Outlook app, not Classic Outlook
If both versions appear, Windows must be set to Outlook (classic) for email defaults.
Classic Outlook is present but not licensed/activated
If Outlook opens with a product notice or update loop, the issue is not the default-app setting. A license that does not include Classic Outlook can cause Windows to fall back to another mail experience.
New Outlook does not work for some Office mail integrations
New Outlook is not MAPI compliant, so actions such as Word > Share > Email as Attachment may fail even when it is set as the default mail app.

To check the default app setting:

Open Settings > Apps > Default Apps.
Search for Outlook.
If both apps appear, select Outlook (classic).
Scroll to MAILTO and confirm it is assigned to Outlook (classic).

If Classic Outlook still does not open after that, check whether it is licensed and activated. If it shows a product notice saying Outlook is not included with the installed Office edition, that must be resolved first.
