A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If Microsoft Authenticator says the backup is not the correct account, recovery works only with the exact same personal Microsoft account that was used when the backup was created.
Try this recovery path on the phone:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator.
- If already signed in, sign out of all accounts first.
- On the start screen, select Restore from backup or Begin recovery before signing in.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account used during the original backup.
Important details:
- On Android, Restore from backup or Begin recovery must be selected before signing in. If sign-in already happened first, sign out and start recovery again.
- If Restore from backup does not appear, remove or sign out of all accounts in Authenticator, then reopen the app.
- For work or school accounts, only the account name is restored. Sign-in is required again after restore.
- For accounts showing Sign in to restore your account or Action required, open the account in Authenticator, tap the recovery/sign-in option, then enter the password and confirm email address or phone number.
If access to the backup account is lost, support cannot restore the Authenticator backup. The remaining option is to add the accounts again or use each app or service’s account recovery process to reset MFA and re-register Authenticator.
