Try this in order:
- Update Office
- Open an Office app such as Word.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
- Start the app in Safe Mode to check add-ins
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- For Word, type
winword /safeand press Enter. - If the app works correctly in Safe Mode, the issue is likely caused by an add-in.
- Disable add-ins one at a time
- While the Office app is still in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- In the Manage list, select the app add-ins type or COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear one add-in, select OK, then restart the app normally.
- If the problem stops, that add-in is the cause. Older add-ins such as ABBYY FineReader and Dragon Naturally Speaking are known to cause Office problems.
- If needed, repeat for the other add-ins.
- Repair Office
- In Windows 11, right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office product, select the ellipsis (...) > Modify.
- If the installation is Click-to-run, select Online Repair > Repair. This is more thorough than Quick Repair.
- If the installation is MSI-based, select Repair > Continue.
- Note: this repairs the entire Office suite, even if only one app is affected.
- Update Windows and device drivers
- Go to Start > type settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- If the issue continues, update drivers for the video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard from the device manufacturer.
- On laptops, also check the laptop manufacturer for updated drivers.
If the app does not start in Safe Mode, the issue is not related to add-ins. In that case, focus on Repair Office and Windows/device driver updates.
