Hi,

I have had two mac books, and each experienced word shutting down and work not saving. I work remotely and our company uses dropbox to upload local word files to share with our team and clients. The pattern I have seen is 1) word closes and is removed from my doc 2) when I open word back up the file is recovered and a lot of work is missing 3) the work that is missing is either all gone or sentences are not there. Our IT has asked me to use word safe mode and then over time I was just using word and not in safe mode. 4) this happened again yesterday and I lost all that I had typed, and the file said "saved" but the content was gone and the recovered file was empty.

What insight do you have from these patterns?

To know your situation better, could you please provide your Word for Mac version. Also, was the Word AutoSave toggle enabled for the affected files when these incidents occurred?

Could you confirm which Dropbox workflow we're using?

Finder/Dropbox folder sync: Word saves locally first, then Dropbox syncs the file afterward.
Dropbox co-authoring: Dropbox is connected directly in Word as a storage location, and AutoSave can continuously save changes during editing. https://help.dropbox.com/view-edit/collaborate-on-microsoft-office#desktop

Thanks for your update. Could you also provide Word for Mac version?

Also please check the Dropbox version history for one of the affected files. You just need to preview it, not necessary to roll back at this time. https://help.dropbox.com/delete-restore/recover-older-versions#recover-version-desktop

Find something like:

Whether there are multiple versions of the file around the time of the incident.

Whether any version contains the content that later went missing.

Whether the version immediately prior to the crash contains the expected edits.

This information will help me determine at what stage the content was lost.

If the missing content never appears in Dropbox version history, it could mean Dropbox failed to sync. It could also indicate that Word never successfully wrote those changes to the document before the crash.

The Word version can be found in Word > About Word, for example version 16.111.3.

Have you also checked the Dropbox version history?

Since the process involves Dropbox, you could also ask your IT admin to contact Dropbox support team.

What are the steps for each of these action items? How do I complete steps 2, 4, and contact Microsoft support?
