If an unknown account appears in Microsoft Authenticator, treat that as a possible account compromise and secure the Microsoft account first.

    1. Turn on stronger sign-in protection in Microsoft Authenticator.
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account Security tab at https://account.microsoft.com/security
      • Select Manage how I sign in
      • Select Add a new way to sign in or verify
      • Choose Use an app
      • In Authenticator, tap the + icon, choose Personal account, and scan the QR code
    2. Turn on Two-step verification.
      • In the same Manage how I sign in area, scroll to Two-step verification and turn it On
      • Follow the on-screen steps
    3. If the app is stuck during passwordless setup with extra accounts already present, add the account directly in Authenticator first.
      • Open Authenticator
      • Select + Add account
      • Choose the account type
      • Select Sign in with Microsoft and complete verification
      • Then go to Add a new way to sign in or verify, choose Use an app, select Next, then Finish
    4. If the issue is caused by two Microsoft accounts using the same email address, remove the sign-in prompt by changing the personal Microsoft account alias.
      • Go to Manage how you sign in
      • Set another existing address as Make primary, or add a new alias
      • This is the documented way to stop the “Which account do you want to use?” prompt
    5. For OneDrive on Mac, only one personal account can be added. A second account must be a work or school account.

If the unknown account is not recognized and keeps appearing, secure the Microsoft account before continuing to use OneDrive or other services.
