Why can't I log into my active Microsoft 365 on my Microsoft apps on my Mac?

I’m unable to sign in to my active Microsoft 365 account through any Microsoft Office app on my Mac. Whenever I attempt to sign in, I receive error code 0x0, followed by the message “Unable to activate Office.”

My Microsoft 365 subscription is active, and I have already installed all available software updates and restarted my Mac. However, the issue persists, and I’m still unable to access or use my subscription. Please help me resolve this activation problem.

    Hi SCL,

There is currently a known issue affecting Office licenses for Mac users. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem, and you can find the latest updates and official confirmation from Microsoft in the following article: Unknown Error 0x0 or License not found error in Microsoft 365 or Office running on macOS | Microsof…

The solution will depend on how your Microsoft Office apps are being updated and managed.

If you installed Microsoft 365 or Office from microsoft.com, follow these steps:

Ensure that you are running at least macOS version 12 or higher.

    Close all Office applications.

Open the Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) from Finder > Applications > Microsoft AutoUpdate.

    Note

If you don’t see MAU, check /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/

If you want to learn about the details of each update before installing, select the arrow next to the Update button and review the apps, versions and installation date. Then select Update All or Update next to individual apps.

After the updates are complete, launch the Office application again to test.

If you installed individual Office apps from the App Store (less likely) follow these steps:

    1. Ensure that you are running at least macOS version 12 or higher.
    2. Close all Office applications.
    3. Open the App Store.
    4. Select Updates from the sidebar
    5. Look for:
    • Microsoft Word
    • Microsoft Excel
    • Microsoft PowerPoint
    • Microsoft Outlook
    • Microsoft OneNote
    1. Select Update next to each app or Update All.
    2. After the updates are complete, launch the Office application again to test.

However, if the issue persists, the most effective next step is reaching out to your IT admin and ask them to use their admin credentials to submit a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Microsoft also provides customer service phone numbers based on your region. Your It admin can find the appropriate contact number here: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

This route ensures that a Microsoft support engineer can initiate a remote session to investigate backend configurations, run advanced diagnostic tools, and, if necessary, escalate the case to specialized teams with access to internal systems and logs. These backend resources are essential for resolving issues that go beyond what’s visible in the user interface.

As community moderators, we’re here to guide you, but due to privacy and security limitations, we don’t have access to the backend tools required for a full resolution. For this reason, contacting Microsoft Support via the Admin Center is the most secure and efficient way forward.

I hope this provides enough clarity and helps you stay inform with your current situation.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.
