How to add a phone number to my account

Yes. This is a known change for personal Microsoft accounts.

Phone numbers can no longer be added as a new security verification method. That is why the Add phone number option may be missing and only Add email appears.

What can still be done:

1. Go to the Microsoft account Security page and open Manage how I sign in.
2. Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
3. Add one of the supported methods instead:
   • an email address
   • Microsoft Authenticator
   • a passkey

Important details:

• Microsoft states: “For increased security, you can no longer add a phone number.”
• Up to 10 different verification methods can be added, but phone number is no longer one of the new options for sign-in verification.
• If the goal is account recovery or sign-in verification, use a recovery email, Authenticator, or passkey instead.

If the phone number was removed from account aliases earlier, the account pages for aliases may still show Add phone number in some documentation, but the current security verification guidance says new phone numbers can no longer be added for verification.
