My authenticator codes are not working

If Microsoft Authenticator codes are not working, check these common causes first:

1. Make sure the Microsoft Authenticator app is unlocked. If the app is locked, the entry box or prompt may not appear.
2. Verify notifications are enabled and not silent for Microsoft Authenticator.
3. Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version.
4. Check the device network connection. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can help.
5. Make sure the device date and time are correct.
6. If verification codes are being sent by email or SMS instead, check the junk folder, make sure the phone can receive texts from unknown numbers, and avoid repeated code requests because that can trigger a temporary block.
7. If another verification method is available, use Try another verification method.
8. If the account is temporarily blocked, wait before trying again. A day may be enough, and in some cases it can take up to 1 week. Do not keep making repeated attempts.

If access to the Microsoft account security info is still available:

1. Sign in to the Security basics page.
2. Select Update info.
3. Choose a method that works, or choose I don't have any of these to replace the security info.

If still unable to receive or use codes, use the sign-in helper or contact Microsoft Support. Support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details.
