A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If the account is present in Microsoft Authenticator but no code appears, use the recovery path based on what access is still available:
- Check whether another sign-in method is available.
- At the sign-in prompt, select Try another verification method or I don't have any of these if shown.
- Use an alternate email or phone number already connected to the account.
- If verification codes are being sent by email instead of the app:
- Check the correct mailbox.
- Check the junk folder.
- Valid verification emails come from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
- If the alternate email is another Microsoft account, open the first account in one privacy-mode window and the alternate email account in a second privacy-mode window so both accounts stay signed in.
- If SMS is an option:
- Make sure the phone can receive texts from unknown numbers.
- If prompted, select I don't have a code to request another one.
- VOIP numbers cannot be used for sign-in or verification codes; a mobile number is required.
- If access to some security info is still available:
- Go to the Advanced security options page and select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Confirm the new email or phone with the code sent to it.
- Then remove the security method that no longer works.
- Do not change all security info at the same time, or the account may be restricted for 30 days.
- If access to all security info is lost but the password is known:
- Start sign-in.
- At Verify your identity, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the prompts to replace the security info.
- After replacement, there is a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed.
- If the password is also unavailable:
- Use the account recovery form: Recover account
- If repeated requests were made already:
- Stop making repeated code requests.
- Temporary blocks can happen because of unusual activity, high request volume, or traffic conditions.
- Wait at least 24 hours; if needed, wait longer, up to 1 week.
- Trying another network can also help.
- If this is a work or school account and the app no longer has a valid registration:
- Another global admin may need to reset MFA registration.
- If there is no other admin, contact Microsoft Support for the business account.
- If no method works:
- Use the sign-in helper tool: Sign-in helper
- Microsoft support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details, but they can route to the correct support option.
