We believe that we have solved the problem -- It certainly was not straight forward, but it seems to have worked (4 laptops were affected and all seem to be working now) - We needed to download a chipset and then download drivers.

Suddenly, unable to unmute microphone on ACER Laptop- (multiple units have the same issue) when search the microphone is not found. We have tried searching for driver - message states best driver found.
Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers -- problem persists

It seems to be related to (see screenshot) Intel Smartsound technology OED
We have searched for drivers - system informs that the best driver is being used. Option to roll back is greyed out, unable to use. We have uninstalled and rebooted to allegedly force a restart - nothing has helped so far.
