Planner and Project Plan 3 - Subtask Issues

I pay for a Planner and Project Plan 3 so I can have some level of advanced task management options. When working in Desktop Planner, the option to make a task a subtask works about 25% of the time. Has anyone run into the same issue? Is there a fix for this?

Good day Emily, and I appreciate the clear explanation of your concern.

Just to gently clarify before we go any further, this is a user‑to‑user support forum. I don’t have the ability to access or investigate individual accounts because this is a user to user support forum. Moderators and contributors, including external Microsoft employees, do not have access to internal systems or the ability to directly take action on Microsoft product features. However, I truly hope I can help review your situation, offer some guidance, and support you in finding the right next steps as best as possible.

I would like to clarify that Planner doesn't have a dedicated desktop application. Instead, it is available through Microsoft 365 experiences, including Planner on the web, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and other integrated Office 365 applications.

Based on your description, the behavior may be related to the current view being used, active filters, temporary synchronization issues, or a session-related problem.

Please see the following workarounds that will help you verify the issue:

Step 1: Confirm your applications are up to date

Ensure that your operating system, web browser, and any Office 365 applications you are using, such as Teams or Outlook, are fully updated.

    Step 2: Refresh the session

If Planner has been open for an extended period, refresh the page and then try creating the subtask again.

Step 3: Verify that you are using a supported view

The Make subtask option is only available in supported views such as Grid and Timeline.

    • Open your premium plan in Planner.
    • Switch to either Grid or Timeline view.

    • Clear any active filters.

    • Verify that all tasks are visible.

    Step 4: Create a subtask

    To create a subtask:

    • Create a parent task.
    • Create another task directly below it.
    • Select the lower task.
    • Right-click the task and choose Make subtask.

The selected task should then become a subtask of the task immediately above it.

I completely understand how these limitations in Planner can feel disruptive. It’s not just about aesthetics; these differences can genuinely affect how smoothly you work and navigate your day.

However, I strongly recommend submitting your feedback through the Planner · Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements.

Once you've submitted your feedback, feel free to share the link here in the comments. I’ll be happy to upvote it to help bring more visibility. If you prefer, I can also submit this great idea on your behalf. Just let me know, and I’ll post it for you and share the link once it’s published. I’m here to help ensure your feedback gets the attention it deserves.

Additionally, as other users have raised similar concerns and may not be aware of where to share their feedback, I hope this response helps clarify the situation and suggests a potential next step. Highlighting this information can make it more visible to others in the community who may be facing the same issue, making it easier for them to find guidance and contribute their feedback as well.

Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern.
