I need help resetting the password for my child's Microsoft account. They are listed as a Member in my Family Safety group.

We tried using the standard "Forgot password" recovery method, but it states it cannot verify our identity.

The unique situation is that my child is not actually locked out yet. They are currently still logged into their account on their tablet to play Minecraft. However, we do not know the password if they ever get logged out.

Since I am the family organiser and they are a verified member in my portal, is there a way to force a password reset from my end? Alternatively, since they are still logged into Minecraft on the tablet, is there a way to update their security info from within the app or device settings without knowing the current password?

Hey there! Nice to meet you!

Just to clarify, can you still sign in to the child account on your tablet using the account.microsoft.com website?

If not, and if the account does not have any linked verification methods for a password reset and the two-factor authentication (2FA) is disabled, I'm afraid the only way to recover the Microsoft account is through the account recovery web form: https://account.live.com/acsr

Important: If the account has an active 2FA, ACSR will inform you that your recovery request will be ignored. If you only receive a message that the recovery request is either successful or indicates insufficient information, this means that 2FA is disabled.

It is also not possible to reset the password through Microsoft family. You'll need to keep trying until you're verified by Microsoft, and you can do this up to 2 times every 24 hours.

If your Microsoft account recovery request was not granted, please review this link for tips on improving your chances of a successful recovery: https://support.microsoft.com/office/dc56c3e3-dff0-4ed5-8edb-60290eea6b53

Please be advised that Microsoft Support will not be able to grant access to any account.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Darhyl
