A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If the accounts were backed up, they can be restored in Microsoft Authenticator.
- Restore works only on the same device type. An iPhone backup can only be restored to iPhone, and an Android backup can only be restored to Android.
- Work or school accounts restore only the account name. They must be signed in again after restore.
- Microsoft personal accounts that use passwordless sign-in also require signing in again after restore.
For Android:
- Open Authenticator.
- Select Restore from backup or Begin recovery before signing in.
- Sign in with the personal Microsoft account used as the recovery account.
- If an account shows Sign in to restore your account or Action required, tap it, sign in, and confirm the email address or phone number.
If Restore from backup does not appear, sign out of or remove all accounts in Authenticator, then try the restore flow again.
For iPhone/iPad:
- Make sure iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup are enabled.
- Install Authenticator.
- Sign in to each account to complete the restore.
If the accounts were not backed up, they cannot be recovered from Authenticator backup. In that case, the accounts must be added again.
If access to the backup account is also lost, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper. If the issue is with a work or school account and sign-in cannot be completed on the new phone, the organization admin may need to reset MFA or require re-registration.
