If the accounts were backed up in Microsoft Authenticator, restore is possible only on the same device type. An iPhone backup can only be restored to iPhone, not Android.

    For iPhone/iPad restore:

    1. On the old device, backup required iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and iCloud Backup with Authenticator turned on in Saved to iCloud.
    2. On the new iPhone, install Authenticator and sign in to complete the restore.
    3. If the backup does not appear, uninstall and reinstall the Authenticator app on the new device.
    4. The old device needed Authenticator version 6.8.33 or later and the app needed to be opened at least once before switching phones.

    What restores:

    • Microsoft personal accounts using one-time password codes: codes are restored.
    • Microsoft personal accounts using passwordless sign-in: only the account name is restored, and sign-in is required again.
    • Work or school accounts: only the account name is restored, and sign-in is required again.
    • Third-party accounts such as Amazon, Facebook, or Gmail: one-time password codes are restored.

    If restore is not possible:

    • If access to the iCloud account is the problem, contact Apple Support.
    • For any other restore issue, add the accounts again in Authenticator.
    • If this is a work or school account and the phone is lost or unusable, sign in using a different method if available, or ask the organization’s Help desk to clear the authentication settings so registration can be done again.

If sign-in prompts are still going to the damaged or old phone, use another verification method if available, such as SMS, or remove the old device from the account after access is restored.
