Microsoft Teams enterprise admin lockout

I have been locked out of my admin console after changing my domain email address for the only account on a brand new domain.

The Accounts team for my company set up the Teams Enterprise account with the onmicrosoft.com email. In the admin console, I tried to change the domain name to our own for the admin account, and then I was logged out and can't get back in with my normal email or the onmicrosoft email account that was set up for me.

I am unable to access business support, and the business automated phone call cuts off when I try to supply my email address for the account. I have the Invoice downloaded and saved for proof, but I can't find a way to make a ticket for business without being logged into the account, which I can't do.

I tried to open a ticket with Microsoft Customer Support, but they immediately closed the ticket as the onmicrosoft account apparently didn't exist. I'm not sure what I have done for this to even happen??

I am at a bit of a loss and only purchased the full-year licence on 09/07/2026. I can't sign saff up to the account to get them working on business calls or messages.

Hi @Tommy Brooks

Thank you for posting your question. I understand how concerning this situation must be, especially since you recently purchased the subscription and are currently unable to access the admin account needed to manage your organization's Microsoft 365 services.

Based on your description, it sounds like the issue may have occurred after changing the administrator account from the original onmicrosoft.com address to your custom domain address.

May I ask approximately how long ago the change was made?

If the change was made recently, I recommend waiting 1 to 2 hours and then trying again. In some cases, changes to the administrator account's sign-in name or domain can take time to fully provision across Microsoft 365 services.

After waiting, please try signing in again using an InPrivate/Incognito browser window and test both:

  • The original onmicrosoft.com account
  • The new custom domain account

This type of situation can sometimes occur while account changes are still propagating, especially in newly created tenants.

I would also recommend creating at least one additional Global Administrator account once access is restored. Having a backup administrator account helps prevent being completely locked out of the tenant if an issue occurs with the primary admin account in the future.

Additionally, could you please confirm:

  • Are you receiving any specific error message when attempting to sign in?
  • Does the issue occur with both the original onmicrosoft.com account and the new custom domain account?
  • Was this the only Global Administrator account in the tenant?
  • If you have been able to raise a support ticket, could you provide that support ticket number that have been closed via the private message?

  • These details will help us better understand what may have happened and suggest the most appropriate next steps.

Thank you again for your time and understanding. I really appreciate your patience, and I'm here to help. I look forward to your response.

    Hi,

So I signed up on 09/07/2026 and made the changes to the account on 10/07/2026.

    • It was the only global account at the time.
    • I have tried via incognito, and I am still not able to sign in
    • My actual custom domain email is still classed as a personal account, so my licence hasn't moved to it and won't allow me access to it.
    • My onmicrosoft account displays the message "This username may be incorrect. Make sure you typed it correctly. Otherwise, contact your admin."

I have set nothing up yet as this was the first thing i attempted to sort and was immediately stopped in my tracks. I can supply the PO for this and the invoice details. I just want to get on with it now, and an account reset would be the quickest way to do this IMO.

    Thanks

    Tommy
