I have Win 11 Home (Retail) and tried to upgrade to Pro using the windows store, and I keep getting error code 0xc004f050

I have a USB edition of Win 11 Home (Retail, not OEM) and now need to upgrade to Pro. I purchased the upgrade in the Windows Store and it seems to work and then fails with the error code 0xc004f050.

From googling this seems to be a common license incompatibility issue, and people recommend disconnecting, installing 11 using a generic license, and then entering your proper license when done. All great, but (a) doesn't work here (get the same error when I put the generic license key) and (b) if it did work, I still don't have a key for 11 Pro, as I bought the upgrade in the store and it doesn't show me one anywhere.

When I check the store it just shows me a completed payment, successful delivery and won't even give me the option for a refund, so I am now £120 worse off, and still don't have Pro.

I believe you are encountering a Windows issue. Let us reinstall Windows, keeping everything so that our Windows health is intact.

"Please try a repair install as the next step. It keeps everything, including apps and files, and reinstalls Windows.

  1. Under Download ISO file, select Windows 11.
  2. Click Download and choose the Language in which Windows is installed.
  3. Click 64-bit Download to start the download.
  4. When downloaded, open the ISO file, and run Setup.exe to start the upgrade."

Once it is done, we can try to upgrade again.

    Hi,

    I understand the frustration caused by this issue. Surely you deserve the product if you purchased it.

    I'm going to run through a few steps with you. Some of these are diagnostic — they help me narrow down what's wrong, not fix it outright. So if nothing changes after a step, that's normal and expected, not a dead end. I'll keep going until we've got this resolved.

    May I know what the activation troubleshooter says? Does it say "Pro" does not have a license, or "Home"?
