Hi Noel Vaughn,

I understand your Surface Pro 6 briefly shows the Windows logo and then goes to a black screen.

Have you tried all Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, before proceeding with the recovery USB, could you try a forced shutdown and UEFI test?

  1. Press and hold the Power button for about 20 seconds until the device turns off completely.
  2. With the Surface powered off, press and hold the Volume Up button.
  3. While holding Volume Up, press and release the Power button.
  4. Continue holding Volume Up until the Surface UEFI screen appears.

Please let me know whether the UEFI screen appears normally.

If the display hardware is functioning and the issue may be occurring when Windows starts loading:

  • If the UEFI screen appears, the display is likely working and the issue may be related to Windows or the storage drive.
  • If the UEFI screen does not appear and the screen remains black, the problem may be hardware-related.

Based on the result, we can determine whether using the recovery USB is the next appropriate step.

To download and use a recovery USB to restore a Surface Pro 6 to its original configuration, follow these steps using another working Windows PC:

  1. Go to the Surface recovery image download page:
    Surface Recovery Image Download
  2. Select the device model (Surface Pro 6) from the list.
  3. Enter the Surface Pro 6 serial number when prompted (the serial number is printed on the device; use that value rather than the other numbers mentioned).
  4. Download the recovery image as a .zip file for Surface Pro 6. If multiple images are available, select the most recent version.

Next, create the USB recovery drive:

  1. On the working Windows PC, insert an empty USB drive (at least 8 GB, formatted FAT32).
  2. Follow the guidance in Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface to copy the downloaded recovery image to the USB and make it bootable.

Then boot the Surface Pro 6 from the USB and restore:

  1. Shut down the Surface Pro 6.
  2. Insert the bootable USB recovery drive into the USB port.
  3. Press and hold the Volume-down button.
  4. While holding Volume-down, press and release the Power button.
  5. When the Surface logo appears, keep holding Volume-down until spinning dots appear.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset/restore the device to factory settings.

If the device is managed in an organization, an IT admin can alternatively use the Surface IT Toolkit Recovery Tool to create a recovery USB and restore the Surface Pro 6.

There again I am really bad about responding. In reality I shouldn't be asking because I do not respond like I should.

I hope the responders will forgive me.

I am very bad about thanking people for their help. I have down loaded the software but haven't had the time to try the installation part yet. Having problems with new build.

    Nothing wants to play ball.

There again I wish to thank all who replied to my post. I apologize for not answering responses sooner.
