Hi @Krzysztof Bielawski,

I’ve read through your description, and I’m really sorry to hear about the authentication issue you're experiencing. I noticed that your post is tagged under the For Business category, so before we go further, may I ask whether you are an end user or an administrator in your Microsoft 365 tenant? The next steps will depend on your role.

If you are an end user, please contact your organization’s IT administrators and kindly ask them follow this guide to revoke existing MFA sessions and require re-registration: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID |…

User's image

This process only takes a few minutes. It will clear out your previous sign-in sessions, and the next time you sign in, you’ll be prompted to set up MFA again from scratch on your phone. That usually resolves the issue and allows the Authenticator app to start generating codes normally again.

If you are an administrator, first check if another admin in your organization can reset MFA for you using the steps above. If you are the only admin, the best next step is to contact Microsoft Support by phone so the frontline team can raise a case for you and route it to the Data Protection team. You can find the correct phone number for your region here: Contact Microsoft customer support | Microsoft Support

In this situation, the Microsoft Data Protection team has tools and processes in place to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts.

Here are some tips and an example of a prompt to help you navigate the IVR more effectively:

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

In some regions, the initial interaction may be automated, so here’s a general idea of how the conversation might go to help you prepare:

What kind of problem are you experiencing?

Answer: Authenticator

What products do you use?

Answer: Office 365 for business

Is this for an education or company account?

Answer: For companies

Are you an administrator?

Answer: Yes

Are there any other administrators in your organization?

Answer: No. I am the only admin in my tenant

Do you need a... Service request?

Answer: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me direct to the Data Protection Teams.

During the phone call, you will need to provide the information you have received through your subscription, such as: Your company name, billing information, phone number, alternate email address, etc. Therefore, our privacy team can help you reset your multi-factor authentication, and after the reset, you can add your account back to your authenticator app on your new phone and set it up from scratch or choose a different authentication method to log in to your account.

I truly hope you're able to get this resolved quickly. While I don't have the ability to access accounts or perform MFA resets from the forum side, guiding you to the correct support channel is the most effective assistance I can provide in this situation.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Follow these steps in order to troubleshoot Microsoft Authenticator not sending notifications and blocking access to Azure:

    1. Confirm the notification is inside the app
      • When the Azure sign-in screen shows a number (for example “41”), open the Microsoft Authenticator app manually on the phone.
      • Unlock the app and swipe down to refresh. The number‑match prompt is often waiting inside the app even if no push banner appears.
    2. Check for silent or blocked notifications
      • On the phone, go to system Settings → Notifications and make sure notifications are allowed for Microsoft Authenticator (sound/vibration not required, but notifications must be enabled).
      • Ensure the phone is not in Do Not Disturb/Quiet mode.
      • Verify that other apps can receive notifications. If no apps receive notifications, fix the phone’s notification or network settings first.
    3. Verify network and time settings
      • Make sure the phone has a working internet connection (Wi‑Fi or mobile data). If already on Wi‑Fi, switch to mobile data, or vice versa.
      • Ensure the device date and time are set to automatic and correct. Incorrect time can cause “Authentication did not complete” and other failures.
    4. Check for app and device issues
      • Make sure Microsoft Authenticator is unlocked when trying to approve.
      • Update Microsoft Authenticator to the latest version from the app store.
      • Restart the phone, then try the sign‑in again and open Authenticator, swiping down to refresh.
    5. Try an alternate verification method (if available)
      • On the Azure sign‑in screen, choose “I can’t use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now” or similar, then select another method such as SMS, phone call, or email if those are configured.
      • If the current method shows “That verification method isn’t working right now. Please try another method,” follow the guidance to use a different verification method or network where possible.
    6. If no method works and sign‑in is blocked
      • For a work/school (Entra ID) account: contact the organization’s Entra ID/Azure administrator and ask them to reset MFA for the account so it can be re‑registered in Microsoft Authenticator.
      • For a personal Microsoft account where all verification methods fail, use the Microsoft account recovery/sign‑in helper linked from the verification‑code troubleshooting article to regain access, then update security info and re‑set up Authenticator.

If none of the above resolves the issue and there is no other admin who can reset MFA (tenant lockout), a support ticket with Microsoft (Data Protection team) is required to restore access to the tenant and Azure services.
