A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
To regain access and change security after getting a new phone, the options depend on what security info is still available.
1. If at least one security method still works
If there is still access to any phone, email, or app that can receive codes:
- Go to the Security basics page and sign in: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=842325
- Select Advanced security options > Get started.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify, then choose phone, email, or an app.
- Enter the new phone number, email, or set up Microsoft Authenticator. A security code will be sent to confirm.
- Enter the code and select Next. The new method will be added.
- In the list of security info, select the old phone/email and choose Remove if it is no longer valid.
This updates security info and lets Outlook on the new phone use the new verification method.
2. If all security info is lost or unknown (work or school account)
If this is a work or school account and there is no access to any of the listed security methods:
- Start sign-in to the work or school account.
- At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don't have any of these.
- Follow the instructions to replace the security info.
- After replacement, sign-in will be blocked for 30 days while the new info is verified. During those 30 days, if the old security info is found again, it can still be used to sign in, which cancels the pending change.
If the password is also forgotten and no security info works, use the account recovery form and provide as much detail as possible about the account activity.
3. If this is a business/organization account and no methods work
If this is a Microsoft 365 business/organization account and there is no working security method:
- Contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator and ask them to reset multifactor authentication (MFA) settings in Microsoft Entra Admin Center so the account can be re-registered on the new phone.
- If the locked account is the only admin account in the tenant, Microsoft’s Data Protection team must be involved via a support ticket raised through official Microsoft support channels.
4. Add the new phone as a trusted device (personal Microsoft account)
Once access is restored:
- On the new phone, go to the Security settings page: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkID=263779
- Sign in and enter a security code.
- Check I sign in frequently on this device. Don't ask me for a code.
- Select Submit.
This reduces how often codes are required on the new Outlook app.
Important cautions
- Do not remove all security info at once; doing so can trigger a 30‑day restriction on the account.
- Support agents cannot bypass verification or send codes to unverified contact details.
