A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
To resolve problems signing in with Microsoft Authenticator for multi-factor authentication, check these common causes and fixes:
- Ensure the Authenticator app is unlocked
If the app is locked, the approval or code entry box may not appear. Open Microsoft Authenticator on the device and unlock it before trying to sign in again. - Check notifications on the device
Silent or disabled notifications can prevent seeing the approval prompt.- Make sure notifications are enabled for Microsoft Authenticator on the phone.
- Also check SMS messages for verification codes that may have arrived silently.
- Update Microsoft Authenticator
An outdated app can cause sign-in failures. Install the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator from your app store. Guidance is available in Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app. - Verify network connectivity
The device running Authenticator must have internet access for push approvals:- If using Wi‑Fi, try switching to mobile data, or vice versa.
- Retry the sign-in after confirming the phone is online.
- Check device date and time settings
Incorrect date/time can break code-based authentication. Ensure the phone is set to the correct time (preferably automatic network time). - Complete the login in the broker app
If a message such as “Authenticator did not complete login” appears, open:- Microsoft Authenticator, or
- Company Portal, or
- The primary Microsoft app on the device and complete the pending sign-in there.
- Use alternative verification options if available
On the sign-in page, choose Other verification options or Other ways to sign in and try:- SMS or phone call, or
- Another configured MFA method.
- If sign-in attempts are blocked after many tries
Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication may temporarily block repeated attempts. Wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method. If suspicious activity is suspected, contact the organization’s IT administrator to review Entra sign-in logs. - If the password is forgotten
Use the password reset flow: Reset your password.
If this is a work or school account and these steps do not help, contact the organization’s Help desk or Microsoft 365 administrator to reset MFA settings or require re-registration of multifactor authentication.
