Windows 11 shows no Internet connection at sign-in even though Ethernet and Wi-Fi are connected

I have an MSI desktop running Windows 11. I normally sign in using Windows Hello with Microsoft Authenticator by scanning a QR code and approving the sign-in with Face ID on my phone.

I was using Microsoft Edge and wanted to check my Instagram. I clicked what I thought was the Instagram app or link, but I don’t think it was actually Instagram. Shortly afterward, I started getting pop-ups saying there was a virus on my computer.

I scanned my computer three separate times using Windows Security, and every scan came back clean with no threats found. Eventually, the virus pop-ups stopped appearing.

However, after all of this, my computer developed a new problem. Windows now says I have no Internet connection, even though my Ethernet cable is connected, my home Internet is working normally, and other devices can access the Internet without any issues. Windows shows that I am connected to the network, but when I try to sign in, it displays the message:

“You’ll need the Internet for this. It doesn’t look like you’re connected to the Internet. Check your connection and try again.”

Because Windows thinks there is no Internet connection, I cannot complete Microsoft account authentication and cannot log into my computer.

I have already tried restarting the computer, reconnecting Ethernet, switching Ethernet ports, and using Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet, but the problem remains. I already checked if it was my VPN and my VPN is not on anymore. I am still having this issue.

Hi!

Did you just click the link? Or did you enter personal information on the site?

Did you click on a prompt asking to Allow or Block access?

Where exactly did you find this link? Was it on the Microsoft Edge homepage during a search...?

Something has affected Windows Hello, which handles the login process. Try this:

  1. First, try to solve the problem by following the steps in the link below:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-signing-in-to-windows-298cfd5f-df1f-c66b-36ad-f2a61a73baad

  1. Try logging in using your account password. Click on Sign-in options > Key icon.
  2. Restart the computer > Make sure it is connected to the internet correctly > Enter your new password. On the lock screen, click Login Options > Key icon to enter your Microsoft password.
  3. Another solution that may help is to disconnect the Internet or Wi-Fi cable from your PC > Restart your computer > Connect the Internet cable > Restart your computer > Enter the PIN or password again.

Point Recovery

If the problem persists, try to restore your PC to a previous point.

  1. Hold down the SHIFT key and restart your computer in the Lock Screen.
  • Hold SHIFT until you access the Recovery Screen

NOTE: If the computer cannot access Windows, before turning on the device, press the F8 key until it enters the Recovery Mode (do not stop pressing the key until you enter the option).

  • Some manufacturers can change this key, such as SHIFT, ESC, F11, F12.
  • Also try holding the key (do not stop holding the key until you enter the option).
  • Try holding the WINDOWS key and the On/Off button, and when the computer starts, release them.
  1. In Recovery Mode, select Troubleshooting > System Restore
  2. Scroll through the Restore Window until you reach the available Restore Points > Choose the latest > Advance the options.

    Thanks for sharing your feedback!

It is possible that changing your firewall and VPN settings directly affected the network. It is strange that the link came from the Microsoft Edge start page.
