Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
I understand that you are seeing an unrecognized Microsoft charge and are concerned that someone may have accessed your Outlook.com/Microsoft account. I am happy to help. Please confirm:
- Can you still sign in to the Microsoft account?
- Does the charge appear in Microsoft order history, or only on your bank/card statement?
Meanwhile, follow these steps:
1) Change your Outlook.com/Microsoft account password first
If you can still sign in, go to your Microsoft account security page and change the password. If you cannot sign in, use Microsoft’s password reset or Sign-in Helper options. See: Change your password in Outlook.com | Microsoft Support
2) If you believe someone accessed your account
Runn a full virus or malware scan before changing the password, then change or reset the password. After that, review account settings such as connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies. See: How to recover a hacked or compromised Microsoft account | Microsoft Support
3) Review recent sign-in activity
- Go to your Microsoft account Security page.
- Select Review activity.
- If you see activity that was not yours, expand it and choose This wasn’t me or Secure your account, if available.
4) Investigate the charge through Microsoft billing
Go to the Microsoft account dashboard’s Manage your payments page and select Investigate for the charge. See: How to investigate a billing charge from Microsoft | Microsoft Support
5) Check your Microsoft order history
- Sign in to your Microsoft Store order history.
- Make sure you are using the correct Microsoft account.
- Compare the date and amount with your card or bank statement.
- Look for charges marked Completed or Redeemed.
See: View your Microsoft Store order history | Microsoft Support
6) If the charge is not recognized or your payment information may be compromised
If you believe someone has acquired your payment information, please contact your bank or payment provider. Disputing only the charge may not stop future fraudulent charges if the card details are compromised.
7) Turn on extra protection after the account is secured
After securing the account:
- Use a strong, unique password.
- Keep recovery information up to date.
- Turn on two-step verification.
- Review recent activity regularly.
- Be cautious with suspicious links or emails.
