Moving from Person 365 to business

I bought a Microsoft Personal 365 package by mistake and need one for business. The retailer won't swap or exchange what I have purchased; how do I upgrade without having to purchase an entirely new program?

Hi D_Myron

Thank you very much for reaching out and taking the time to share your concern.

Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 business subscriptions are managed differently. Personal plans are tied to a personal Microsoft account, while business plans are set up under a separate business (work) account. Because of this, moving from Personal to Business is not a direct “upgrade” or exchange of the same purchase.

Since your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription was purchased through a third-party retailer, any cancellation, refund, or exchange would need to be handled by that retailer. Microsoft does not process refunds for purchases made through external sellers.

For reference: Manage your Microsoft 365 subscription purchased through a third party | Microsoft Support

If the Personal product key or subscription hasn’t been redeemed yet, it’s best not to activate it. Once redeemed, a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription becomes tied to a personal Microsoft account, whereas business subscriptions follow a separate setup process using a work account.

I recommend reaching out to the retailer again to check if they can assist with an exchange or adjustment.

If the retailer is unable to assist with an exchange, here are your available options:

  1. Purchase the Microsoft 365 business plan you need (such as Business Basic, Business Standard, or Business Premium). During setup, you will create a business account (usually ending in onmicrosoft.com) and can add a custom domain later if needed.
  2. If you’ve already redeemed the Personal subscription, you can turn off recurring billing or cancel it from your Microsoft account. Refund eligibility will depend on the retailer’s policy.
  3. Manually move any data (such as OneDrive files, emails, contacts, calendar items, or OneNote notebooks) from your personal account to your new business account if needed.

In summary, there is generally no way to convert a third-party Microsoft 365 Personal purchase directly into a business subscription without purchasing the business plan separately. However, it may still be worth contacting the retailer again with your proof of purchase to check if any exception or refund is available.
