Try these steps in order until the third screen is detected again:

    1. Check basic connections and hardware
      • Disconnect all accessories (docks, dongles, adapters) from the PC.
      • Reseat the video cable for the 3rd monitor at both ends.
      • Try a different cable for that monitor.
      • Test the 3rd monitor on another PC to confirm it works.
      • If the PC has multiple video ports (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.), plug the 3rd monitor into a different port.
    2. Confirm Windows display settings
      • Press Windows logo key + P and select Extend.
      • Open Settings → System → Display and use Detect to search for additional displays.
      • If a display appears as “Disconnected” or similar, set it to Extend desktop to this display.
    3. Check multi‑monitor capability and hardware limits
      • If only one external monitor works, the graphics adapter may not support more than two displays (laptop screen + 2 externals). For more than one external monitor, a docking station or USB‑C video adapter may be required.
      • Avoid using a simple “display splitter” if trying to extend to more than one external monitor; those typically only duplicate the same signal, not create an extra independent display.
    4. Reset graphics and force detection
      • Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver and force Windows to re-detect displays.
      • If the 3rd screen still doesn’t appear, restart the PC.
    5. Update or roll back display drivers after the update
      • In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager and open Device Manager.
      • Expand Display adapters, right‑click the display adapter, select Properties → Driver.
      • If the issue started right after an update and Roll Back Driver is available, select it.
      • If Roll Back Driver is not available or doesn’t help, reinstall the driver:
        1. In Device Manager, right‑click the display adapter → Uninstall device.
        2. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device and select Uninstall.
        3. Restart the PC if prompted.
        4. Open Device Manager again, right‑click the display adapter → Update driverSearch automatically for updated driver software.
    6. Run Windows Update again
      • After a major Windows update, some device drivers may not migrate correctly. Run Settings → Windows Update and install all available updates so Windows can reinstall any missing or updated display drivers.

If the 3rd screen still isn’t detected after these steps, contact the PC or graphics adapter manufacturer to confirm the maximum number of supported displays and obtain the latest OEM graphics drivers.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

This usually happens after a display driver update, Windows update, or dock/adapter reset.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already already:

    • Right-click the desktop > Display settings > scroll down > click Multiple displays > Detect.
    • Also press Windows key + P and choose Extend.
    • If the third monitor is still not detected, restart the PC with all monitors connected. If you use a docking station or USB-C/HDMI adapter, unplug it from power for 30 seconds, then reconnect it.

    Next, check the graphics driver:

    • Right-click Start > Device Manager > expand Display adapters > right-click your graphics driver > Properties > Driver tab.
    • If Roll Back Driver is available, try that. If not, go to the PC maker’s website and install the latest graphics driver for your exact model.

Let me know how it goes.

If issue still persists, to help narrow down the issue:

    1. Is the third screen connected directly to the laptop/PC, or through a dock/adapter?
    2. Does the monitor work if you swap cables or connect it as the only external display?
    3. What update was installed before this started, Windows update or graphics driver update?

Thank you, once again, Microsoft for rendering things unusable.

After an overnight Windows update, my portable monitor, connected via USB-C is no longer detected. Port works fine. Plug in my speacker there, no issues. Monitor and cord work just fine. Plugged them into another computer. No issues. Went through drivers. Restarted with monitor plugged in and unplugged in. Nothing. No change.

And no option to roll back to previous update.

This is frequently related to Nvidia driver updates - which can also occur with Windows Updates - and/or (temporarily) swapping monitors.

    1. Open Device Manager
    2. Under the [View] menu check 'Show hidden devices'
    3. in the Device Tree, expand Monitors
    4. Delete at least all Monitors that are 'greyed' out / semi-transparent; the inactive/not connected devices.
    5. You can even delete all entries if step 4) didn't help. They will be recreated anyway and that clean start could help
    6. Reboot

In case you have a Nvidia videocard (possibly also for other brands, not sure) and the above didn't work; try the following too; this below always works for me ! You can try both at once, i.e. skip step 6) above if you want to.

    1. Open Registry Editor.
    2. Open they key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
    3. Delete the subkeys: Configuration, Connectivity and Scale Factor
    4. Reboot

After the reboot all your screens will be 'Duplicated' instead of 'Extended' and also the screen order might be reset.
To fix that again, open/search in start for: Display Settings and adjust the settings accordingly.
