Audio and Microphone Issues: Monitor usage and Team Meetings cause disconenction

I am writing to request some help troubleshooting an ongoing issue with my audio and peripheral devices. Everything usually works fine prior to a call, but the moment I join a Microsoft Teams meeting with my adapter connected, my audio and microphone immediately cut out. I have tried disconnecting my headphones and my external monitor to reset the connection, but the audio does not recover. I am currently at a point where my system speakers and Bluetooth are completely non-functional, meaning I cannot hear anything regardless of whether external devices are connected. Additionally, this issue seems to have also disabled the mouse connected to my external monitor.

Hi Newbold,

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing those details.

To help narrow down the cause, please share the following information:

  1. When this happens, are you the organizer of the Teams meeting, or are you joining a meeting set up by someone else?
  2. Does the issue still occur when you join a call from another computer, using the same account?
  3. Does the issue occur if you join the meeting without using the adapter
  4. Does this happen across all your meetings, or only with one specific meeting?
  5. Are you using the Teams desktop app or Teams on the web? What is your device operating system (MacOS or Windows)?

Thank you for your time and cooperation. I'm looking forward to your response.

    Hi Newbold,

    Thank you for your response.

Since the audio also drops and reroutes to your computer speakers even without the adapter connected, the issue points to how Windows and Teams are managing your audio devices rather than the adapter alone. Here is what you can do on your end to resolve it:

    1. Set a fixed audio device in Windows
    • Go to Settings > System > Sound
    • Under Output, choose your headphones as the device, then scroll to Advanced and, under App volume and device preferences, make sure nothing is overriding it.

    1. Select the device inside Teams
    • In Teams, go to Settings and more, then Settings, then Devices.
    • Under Audio devices, select your headphones explicitly for both Speaker and Microphone rather than leaving it on the default option.

    User's image

    • This stops Teams from re-selecting a different device when a meeting starts.
    1. Try a call using Teams on the web
    • Sign in to Teams on the web with the same account.
    • Join a test call to check the audio.
    1. Contact Microsoft Support

If the problem continues after working through these steps, the best next step would be to have your IT administrator open a support ticket with Microsoft via the admin center. A technical support engineer can then initiate a remote session, review backend settings, and run diagnostics. If needed, they can escalate the case to specialized engineering teams who are well-equipped to perform advanced troubleshooting and provide targeted solutions.
