A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Follow these steps to troubleshoot missing Microsoft Authenticator notifications and codes:
- Check that notifications are enabled
- On the phone, open Settings.
- Find Notifications (or similar) and ensure notifications are allowed for Microsoft Authenticator.
- In the Authenticator app, go to Settings → Notification Settings and make sure Show notifications is turned on.
- Make sure the phone is not in Do Not Disturb/Quiet mode.
- Verify the app is unlocked and active
- Open Microsoft Authenticator and ensure it is not locked.
- If prompted, unlock it with PIN/biometric and keep it open while trying to sign in again.
- Check for silent or missing alerts
- If notifications are silent, you might not see or hear the prompt. Ensure sound/vibration is enabled for Authenticator notifications.
- If using SMS as a backup, check text messages in case a code arrived silently.
- Update Authenticator and device
- Make sure the app is up to date. Microsoft does not support versions more than 12 months old. Use the Get the latest link in the app’s settings or from the store.
- Ensure the phone’s OS and any security apps (like Microsoft Defender or Intune Company Portal) are updated.
- Check network and time settings
- Confirm the phone has internet access. If using mobile data, try switching to Wi‑Fi and vice versa; ensure Airplane mode is off.
- Make sure the device’s Date & time are correct and set to automatic, then restart the device.
- If no notifications at all
- Confirm other apps can receive notifications. If not, there may be a broader notifications or network issue on the device.
- If some accounts in Authenticator receive notifications but others do not, remove the problematic account from the app, add it again (allowing notifications), and test.
- If sign-in still says “Authentication did not complete”
- This can be caused by:
- App locked
- Silent/disabled notifications
- Outdated app
- Network issues
- Incorrect device date/time
- Re-check each of these, then retry the sign-in.
- This can be caused by:
If none of these steps work and there is no alternative verification method (like SMS or another app), contact the account’s support or IT admin to reset the authentication method.
