Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
To return to a Microsoft 365 subscription without AI features (Classic), the subscription must be changed/downgraded from the current AI-enabled plan back to a Classic plan. This is done through the Microsoft account subscription management page by using the cancel/switch flow.
Follow these steps:
- Go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the current Microsoft 365 Personal (with AI) subscription.
- Locate the Microsoft 365 subscription that was upgraded (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal or Family with Copilot/AI) and select Manage or Manage subscription.
- Select Cancel subscription (or Upgrade or Cancel, then choose Cancel subscription).
- During the cancellation/switch process, look for the option to switch/downgrade to a Classic plan (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal Classic or Family Classic) instead of fully cancelling. Microsoft presents this as a lower-feature, lower-cost alternative.
- Confirm the switch by following the on-screen instructions. The current AI-enabled plan will continue until the end of the current billing period, then renew into the Classic plan without AI.
Important points:
- Switching to a subscription with fewer features (such as Classic without AI) is handled as a change of plan via the cancel/switch flow; the subscription remains active until it renews into the new plan.
- Only the subscription owner can manage and change the subscription.
- If the subscription was purchased through a third party (for example, Apple App Store, another retailer), the change or cancellation must be done through that retailer’s subscription/billing system instead of the Microsoft account site.
- If the option to switch to Classic does not appear, contact Microsoft Billing Support so an agent can review the account and available plan options.
