The message usually means the payment method couldn’t be authorized or added to the Microsoft account wallet. Use these steps to add the card correctly and resolve common causes:

    1. Go directly to the Microsoft account payment page (instead of through the claim flow):
      • Sign in at the Payment options page: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
      • Select Add a new payment method.
      • Enter the card details exactly as they appear on the card and bank statement (card number, name, expiration date, security code, billing address including city, state, and ZIP/postal code).
      • If the card is not accepted, try entering the postal code with and without spaces.
    2. Check country/region and card origin:
      • The payment method must be issued in the same country/region as the Microsoft account/tenant.
      • If the card is from a different country, it may be rejected. In that case, either use a card from the same country/region or change the Microsoft account region (only recommended if actually moving long‑term):
        • Go to Your infoEdit profile info and change the country/region, then return to Payment options and add the card again.
    3. Verify with the bank:
      • Some banks require extra security (multi‑factor authentication / 3‑D Secure). If the OTP step completes but Microsoft still shows “Try again” or “not authorized,” the bank may be blocking the transaction.
      • Contact the bank or card issuer and ask them to:
        • Confirm the card is active and allowed for online/recurring payments.
        • Check if any security rules are blocking Microsoft/Xbox/Game Pass charges.
    4. Retry the claim after the card is added:
      • Once the card appears successfully under Payment options, go back to the Game Pass offer on the new laptop and claim it again.
    5. If the card still cannot be added:
      • Try a different supported payment method (another card, PayPal with a confirmed funding source, or mobile phone billing if available in the region).
      • If the issue persists even with a valid local card and correct details, contact Microsoft Support for billing so they can review the account and payment attempt.

For the 3‑month PC Game Pass that came with the laptop, once a valid payment method is on file and the claim succeeds, the subscription should activate and future renewals will use the stored payment method unless recurring billing is turned off.
