Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Account recovery for a Microsoft account is fully automated and support cannot manually reset passwords or change account details.
To try to get back into the child’s Microsoft account used for Sea of Thieves, only the official recovery and verification flows can be used:
- If the username and password have simply stopped working or are forgotten:
- Go to the Recover your account page: Recover your account.
- Enter the email address used for the child’s Microsoft account.
- Choose where to receive the security code (email/phone) and complete the verification steps.
- Set a new password if verification succeeds.
- If the message “We couldn't find an account with that username” appears, try any other alias or phone number that might be on the account, as described in My username and password have stopped working.
- If there is no access to the security info (recovery email/phone) anymore:
- Use the Microsoft account recovery form process described in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
- First, ensure there is a working email address that can receive updates about the recovery request (this can be any active email, including a new Outlook.com address).
- Then submit the recovery form with as much accurate information as possible. The questions about recent emails, subjects, devices, and services are part of how ownership is verified; if enough correct detail cannot be provided, the system will not grant access.
- If all security info is lost and the recovery form cannot be passed:
- Follow the guidance under Troubleshoot Microsoft verification code issues → If you don't know your password:
- Read the article Help with the Microsoft account recovery form carefully.
- Submit a request via the recovery form: Recover account.
- If the automated process still fails, the account cannot be recovered. Support agents are not allowed to override this or directly restore access.
- Follow the guidance under Troubleshoot Microsoft verification code issues → If you don't know your password:
- If the account may have been changed or compromised (for example, if sign‑in details were altered):
- Use the hacked/compromised account guidance from Account hacked? and the linked Sign‑in Helper: Open the Sign-in Helper for support options or hacked account issues.
- If sign‑in is still impossible after following those steps and the recovery form is unsuccessful, the account is considered unrecoverable.
There is no supported way to bypass the recovery questions, and Microsoft support cannot manually restore access, unlink the account, or refund game purchases through the account recovery channel. If the automated recovery fails, the only remaining options are to:
- Continue trying the recovery form with any additional accurate details that can be remembered, or
- Use a different Microsoft account for future purchases and sign‑ins.
