For a school (work/school) account, when Microsoft Authenticator is deleted and there is no other verification method configured, only an administrator can get the account unstuck.

Use these steps depending on what is available:

    1. Check for any alternative MFA method
When prompted for verification on sign-in, look for a link such as “Sign in another way” or “Other verification options” and select it.
      • If an alternative method (office phone, SMS, email, etc.) appears, use that to complete sign-in.
      • After signing in, go to your Security info / Additional security verification page and add a new method (phone or Microsoft Authenticator on your current device), then remove the old/invalid method.
    2. If there is no alternative method and you are locked out
In this case, self-service recovery is not possible. The school’s IT/admin team must reset MFA for the account:
      • Contact the school’s IT help desk or Microsoft 365/Microsoft Entra administrator and explain that the Authenticator app was deleted and no other verification method is available.
      • Ask them to reset your MFA or to Require re-register multifactor authentication for your user in the Microsoft Entra admin center.
      • After they do this, the next successful sign-in will prompt to set up MFA again (add the Authenticator app and/or phone number on the current device).
    3. Avoid repeated failed attempts
Multiple failed sign-in or MFA attempts can trigger temporary protection blocks. If many attempts were made, wait before trying again, or use a different MFA method once the admin has added or reset it.

Going forward, after MFA is reset and working again, add at least one backup method (for example, phone call or SMS) so that if the Authenticator app is removed or the phone is replaced, there is another way to sign in.

    Hi Seb Yao

Because your account is school account, it is managed by your school's IT department. Microsoft doesn't have direct access to reset authentication settings for organization-managed accounts. However, you can contact your organization's IT administrator and request a reset of your MFA settings by following this article: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication - Microsoft Entra ID | Microsoft Learn
