Follow these steps to troubleshoot why the SharePoint shared drive (SharePoint Online site) cannot be accessed:
- Confirm user permissions
- Verify that affected users still have the appropriate permissions to the SharePoint site or specific libraries/files.
- If permissions were removed or changed, re‑grant access to the site or file as needed.
- If users continue to receive "Access Denied" or "You need permission to access this site" after permissions are granted, follow the guidance in the SharePoint "Access Denied" troubleshooting article referenced below.
- Check for folder‑level sharing issues
- If only a specific shared folder is failing (for example, users get "Access Denied" when opening a shared folder but not the whole site), check whether the Limited-access user permission lockdown mode site collection feature is enabled.
- When this feature is enabled and a folder is shared with users who do not have access to the parent site or library, they can receive "Access Denied" or similar messages because the Limited Access permissions needed on parent items no longer work correctly.
- Workarounds:
- Share individual files instead of the folder, or
- Share the entire site collection or subsite with those users, or
- If the site does not require Limited-access user permission lockdown mode (for example, no publishing features depend on it), disable that site collection feature.
- Check if SharePoint/OneDrive is generally inaccessible
- If no one can reach any SharePoint or OneDrive site (not just this one), follow the general accessibility checks:
- Ensure users have the correct permissions as above.
- If permissions are correct but users still cannot access SharePoint Online, use the broader troubleshooting guidance for "Unable to access SharePoint Online" referenced below.
- If no one can reach any SharePoint or OneDrive site (not just this one), follow the general accessibility checks:
- Check for DNS or subscription issues
- If browsers show an error like
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAINor "This site can’t be reached" when accessing SharePoint or OneDrive:- Verify that the Microsoft 365 subscription including SharePoint/OneDrive is still active. If it has expired, reactivate the subscription.
- If the subscription is active, flush the local DNS cache on affected machines:
- Open Command Prompt as described in the context.
- Run
ipconfig /flushdns. - Try accessing the SharePoint site again.
- If the issue persists after these steps and the subscription is active, contact Microsoft technical support as indicated in the reference.
- If browsers show an error like
If, after checking permissions, site features (Limited-access user permission lockdown mode), general SharePoint accessibility, and DNS/subscription status, the site is still inaccessible, escalate through Microsoft 365 admin support with details of the errors users see and the steps already taken.
