Hi, I would like to inquire whether Microsoft Copilot for Business licenses can be assigned to users who currently hold Microsoft Education licenses. Could you please confirm the eligibility, licensing requirements, and any prerequisites for enabling Copilot Business within an educational licensing environment?

Additionally, if there are any specific limitations, supported education plans, or recommended licensing options for deploying Copilot in an academic institution, I would appreciate your guidance.

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your response.

Hello @Thishni Perera
Based on my understanding, Microsoft offers different licensing models for Copilot depending on the tenant type (commercial vs education). For education customers, you generally should not use a Copilot license purchased under a commercial (business) plan. Instead, Copilot must be aligned with education licensing:

  • Microsoft 365 A3 Extra Features for faculty
  • Microsoft 365 A5 Extra Features for faculty

These licenses require users to have a qualifying base plan (Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 for faculty, or the Office 365 A3/A5 equivalents).

Additionally, if you already have Copilot for Microsoft 365 under a commercial subscription, it may not be assignable to users with Microsoft 365 Education licenses, as the Copilot add-on must match the underlying base license. To check it, please go to Billing > Purchase services and search for “Copilot” or “Extra Features” to check whether A3/A5 Extra Features for faculty licenses are available, then assign them to eligible users.

However, for more targeted support in your scenario, you may want to contact your IT admin or submit a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, as this forum is mainly user-to-user support and moderators can only provide guidance based on publicly available information: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/get-help-support?view=o365-worldwide

Thank you for your understanding.
